The film will represent India in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2027.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Set against the backdrop of rural Maharashtra, \u2018Gondhal\u2019 unfolds over the course of a night during a traditional ritual centred around a newly married couple. The film was chosen from a list of 33 contenders, with P Seshadri serving as the chairperson of the selection committee, according to PTI.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>The selection marks another milestone for Marathi cinema at the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/academy-awards\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academy Awards<\/a>. \u2018Gondhal\u2019 becomes the fourth Marathi film to be chosen as India\u2019s official Oscar entry, following \u2018Shwaas\u2019 (2005), \u2018Harishchandrachi Factory\u2019 (2009) and \u2018Court\u2019 (2015).<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>Santosh Davakhar\u2019s film has also previously earned recognition at the International Film Festival of India, where he won the Silver Peacock for Best Director for \u2018Gondhal\u2019.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>Last year, India had selected Neeraj Ghaywan\u2019s \u2018Homebound\u2019 as its official submission for the Oscars. However, the film did not secure a nomination.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>India is yet to win the Best International Feature Film category, which was earlier known as the Best Foreign Language Film category. Three Indian films have received nominations in the category so far \u2014 Mehmood Khan\u2019s \u2018Mother India\u2019, Mira Nair\u2019s \u2018Salaam Bombay\u2019 and Ashutosh Gowariker\u2019s \u2018Lagaan\u2019.
