The European Union wants 300 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2050. A new study from Germany suggests turbines at that scale could do more than generate electricity. They could also change where rain falls.Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon found that very large offshore wind farm clusters may push more rain over the sea and leave parts of the coastline drier. In their simulations, coastal areas in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom saw rainfall drop by up to 15%. The findings were published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.

Turbines slow the wind and stir up the air above the sea

A wind turbine works by taking energy out of moving air. The wind behind it ends up slower and more turbulent. That turbulence mixes different layers of the atmosphere. Moist air gets pushed upward, where it cools, condenses and forms clouds. The result is more rain directly over the wind farms. The catch is that air can only carry so much moisture. When more of it falls over the sea, less is left by the time the air reaches land. Coastal regions downwind get less rain as a result.

Ten years of weather data went into the North Sea rainfall model

The team at Hereon’s Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling used a high-resolution regional climate model called COSMO-CLM. The simulations ran on weather data from 2008 to 2017. Using a full decade smoothed out the effect of any single unusual year and gave a clearer view of long-term patterns. The model included existing wind farms and every zone marked for future development across the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.“Our work helps ensure that the further expansion of offshore wind energy in Europe can be aligned with the requirements of climate protection, environmental protection and coastal management,” said Dr Naveed Akhtar, the study’s lead author.

The study tested an extreme wind buildout, not Europe’s actual plan

The scenario was extreme by design. The researchers assumed maximum turbine deployment across all designated areas, which pushed installed capacity well past the 300 GW target. The goal was to make any climate effect large enough to detect and measure. It is not a forecast of what Europe will build. The results also describe long-term weather averages. They do not mean a specific town will miss rain on a specific day. Earlier Hereon research has shown that farm size, layout and turbine spacing affect how strongly turbines change the atmosphere, so a smaller or more spread-out buildout may have a milder effect. So will Europe’s coasts lose rain? That depends on how the continent builds. The researchers are not arguing against offshore wind. They want more realistic scenarios tested for turbine density, farm size and placement, and they plan to study effects on the ocean and marine life next. For countries that share the same weather systems, where a wind farm goes may matter as much as how much power it produces.

Source link

Europe is counting on offshore wind to move away from fossil fuels, and the North Sea is at the centre of that plan.
