In his speech, he described how doctors initially believed he had an incurable form of pancreatic cancer and expected him to live only three to six months. A subsequent biopsy revealed a rare form that could be treated with surgery. For Jobs, the experience changed the way he viewed everyday decisions. He spoke about death not simply as an ending, but as a reminder that time is finite. In his view, remembering that fact could strip away fear, embarrassment and other people’s expectations and make it easier to identify what actually matters. His own life had already been marked by unexpected turns. He had dropped out of Reed College, later co-founded Apple, and was eventually fired from the company he helped create. Looking back, he said those experiences ultimately shaped what came next. The larger message behind the quote is simple: success is not necessarily about constructing the life other people consider successful. It is also about asking whether the life you are building actually belongs to you.Jobs ended that part of his address by urging graduates to have the courage to follow their heart and intuition.Nearly two decades later, the question still works as a useful pause: Are you spending your limited time pursuing what matters to you, or simply following what others expect?

Source link

There was a question Steve Jobs said he asked himself every morning: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? That question became one of the most powerful ideas in his 2005 Stanford commencement speech.
