Derek Jeter’s company acquired three adjoining lots in 2005 and 2006 for about $7.7 million, according to a report by Mansion Global. The asking price seemed steep for vacant land, but this was prime real estate: 345 feet of bay frontage on a man-made island minutes from downtown. The former New York Yankees captain decided to build a custom mansion on the waterfront parcel. Construction took four years. By 2012, the 22,000-square-foot mansion stood alone as Davis Islands’ largest property. The compound included seven bedrooms, a wine cellar, a movie theatre, six-car garage, gym, dock with boat lifts, and an 80-foot pool. A six-foot brick wall surrounded the mega-mansion, with frustrated neighbours nicknaming it the Great Wall of Jeter. For nearly a decade, the mansion sat there. In 2017, Jeter moved to Miami, leaving the half-occupied home. At the same time, Tom Brady needed a place to live.In April 2020, Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and needed immediate housing. He called Jeter, and they negotiated a rental arrangement that let Jeter list the place for sale while Brady lived there with his supermodel wife, Gisele Bündchen, and family. The quarterback even joked about it once, calling Jeter his landlord. Soon, Brady won a Super Bowl, and the mansion became the talk of the town.

Record-breaking sale and demolition plans

Pic credit: Realtor.com

By the end of 2020, Jeter listed the property for $29 million. There were potential buyers, but many thought the price point was high. The mansion stayed on the market through 2021 until finally, in May, an offer came. The final price: $22.5 million. It was the highest price ever paid for a residential property in Tampa. But nobody knew the buyer’s name. It never appeared in public records. Instead, a trust called ‘Zebb.com Trust’ took the title. The mysterious new owner, whoever they were, had grand plans. According to a report by the Tampa Bay Times, a demolition permit was filed by a construction firm. The plan was to tear down Jeter’s mansion and build something even larger: a 30,000-square-foot residence designed for a local family. The proposed house was designed to have six bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and 11 half-bathrooms, along with a gym, swimming pool and substantial green space. Construction was expected to take several years. It was supposed to start in 2024. The demolition permit expired in 2023. No new permits followed. Ellison Construction hasn’t filed renewed permits in the three years since the first one lapsed. According to the outlet, public records from Hillsborough County list no activity on the property beyond routine tax matters. In 2023, local entrepreneur Sidd Pagidipati and his wife registered the address as their primary residence, which entitled the trust to a homestead tax exemption. But they haven’t spoken about what happens to the mansion.
