(Photo: ABC News)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A 10-year-old boy in Tasmania became a real-life hero just a day after dressing up as his favourite video game character for Book Week. Ollie Brunskill was dressed as Link from The Legend of Zelda when he alerted his family to a fire in their home in Prospect Vale, northern Tasmania, and helped get his baby sister to safety.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>According to ABC News, the fire broke out in the family\u2019s kitchen after a mandoline slicer was accidentally left on a hot plate. The flames quickly spread, but Ollie noticed the fire through the reflection of a kitchen window.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Rather than panic, Ollie immediately alerted his mother, Stacey Brunskill, and then rushed to get his baby sister, Nora, out of the house.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>\u201cMy son came over and alerted me that there was a fire,\u201d Stacey said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>\u201cI came out to see what was going on and there was probably about a half-metre-high flame on the stove at that point.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>She said Ollie quickly got Nora out of her therapy chair, carried her outside and took her to a neighbour\u2019s house.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Fire blanket helps contain growing flames<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The young boy calmly alerted his mother after seeing flames reflected in a kitchen window.\" msid=\"134296257\" imgsize=\"77937\" resizemode=\"4\" width=\"\" title=\"The young boy calmly alerted his mother after seeing flames reflected in a kitchen window. (Photo: ABC News)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>Stacey managed to smother the growing fire using a fire blanket, which she said she was \u201cso grateful\u201d to have at home.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>\u201cThe fire brigade said that&#8217;s what stopped it from expanding further &#8230; if I didn&#8217;t have that, chances are that my house would have been completely demolished,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>By then, the house had filled with black smoke. After calling Triple Zero (000), Stacey retrieved a fire extinguisher from her car and used it through the kitchen window.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>\u201cI managed to blast it through my kitchen window and get the fire out enough for my neighbour to run over and put the hose through the window,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Although the fire was contained to the kitchen, smoke and soot damaged or ruined many belongings throughout the house.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/>\u201cEvery door in the house was open &#8230; my son&#8217;s new bedding through to my daughter&#8217;s new playpen and car seat, all of that was in the lounge room,\u201d Stacey said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>\u2018If Oliver hadn\u2019t been here, we might not even be here\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"His mother said Ollie\u2019s quick thinking may have saved the family\u2019s lives.\" msid=\"134296260\" imgsize=\"47521\" resizemode=\"4\" width=\"\" title=\"His mother said Ollie\u2019s quick thinking may have saved the family\u2019s lives. (Photo: ABC News)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>Despite the damage, Stacey believes the outcome could have been far worse without her son\u2019s quick thinking.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>\u201cIf Oliver hadn&#8217;t been here &#8230; we might not even be here,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>Ollie\u2019s actions were later recognised when he received a certificate of bravery from Education Minister Jo Palmer in front of his primary school on Wednesday.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>For the 10-year-old, the recognition had special meaning because of the character he had dressed up as just a day earlier.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Ollie says Link inspired him<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ollie said he admires Link because he is \u201csomeone who saves people and species\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"46\"\/>\u201cSince Link&#8217;s a hero, that next day I became a hero,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/>\u201cAnd I have long hair so I can dress up like him.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/>Ollie recalled seeing the kitchen engulfed in flames but said he was able to remain calm because he felt prepared.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"53\"\/>\u201cInstead of grabbing everything which I really wanted to, I grabbed my baby sister,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"55\"\/>\u201cI stayed calm so my mum would stay calm.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"57\"\/>\u201cSaving my baby sister wasn&#8217;t on my bucket list,\u201d he added.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"59\"\/>The 10-year-old also had a message for other children, urging them never to play with fire.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>\u201cAnd make sure nothing is on your stove unless you&#8217;re cooking, but have an adult help you,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"63\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>School praises Ollie\u2019s bravery<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ollie received a certificate of bravery for helping his family escape the house fire.\" msid=\"134296261\" imgsize=\"24920\" resizemode=\"4\" width=\"\" title=\"Ollie received a certificate of bravery for helping his family escape the house fire. (Photo: ABC News)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"66\"\/>Summerdale Primary School acting principal Toby O\u2019Connor praised Ollie, describing him as a child with a \u201cheart of gold\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"69\"\/>He said staff and students were filled with \u201camazement and immense pride\u201d following the incident.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"71\"\/>\u201cWe&#8217;re very lucky, as most government schools are, to have fire education in school,\u201d O\u2019Connor said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"73\"\/>\u201cWe&#8217;ve had that in the last couple of months &#8230; I know after listening to Ollie and what he was able to do, that&#8217;s a result of his bravery but also the education he&#8217;s been able to gain from those valuable sessions.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"76\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Mother urges families to keep fire-safety equipment at home<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Stacey encouraged parents with young children to invest in basic fire-safety equipment, including fire blankets and extinguishers.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"80\"\/>She said she was \u201cexceptionally proud\u201d of her son.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"82\"\/>\u201cMore than I can ever put into words,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"84\"\/>Stacey also shared that Ollie has level two autism and ADHD and said she was especially proud that he was able to remain focused during the emergency.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"86\"\/>\u201cHe&#8217;s pretty awesome because he also has level two autism and ADHD and is usually very full on and getting criticised for not paying enough attention to things,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"88\"\/>\u201cHe&#8217;s the one that has saved us from potentially not being here.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/rest-of-world\/meet-ollie-brunskill-the-10-year-old-launceston-boy-who-spotted-a-kitchen-fire-carried-his-baby-sister-outside-and-later-received-a-tasmanian-government-bravery-award\/articleshow\/134296126.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ollie Brunskill was dressed as Link from The Legend of Zelda just a day before the fire.
