For Pranati Nayak, simply continuing to stand on the gymnastics floor has become part of the journey. The 31-year-old from West Bengal is preparing for her fourth Asian Games, a remarkable milestone in a career that has taken her from leaving her family behind as a young girl to representing India at the Olympics. She is also the lone Indian gymnast selected for the 2026 Asian Games, where she will compete in the women’s vault and all-around events. Her journey began with a difficult choice. Pursuing gymnastics meant moving away from home and family at a young age of eight. What followed was years of training, travelling, injuries and the constant pressure that comes with trying to stay relevant in a sport where careers can be brutally short.Yet Nayak kept returning. She became the second Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics when she competed at Tokyo 2020. She has also built a reputation as one of India’s most consistent vaulters, winning Asian Championships bronze in 2019 and 2022. The 2022 medal made her the first Indian gymnast to win two medals at the Asian Championships.

Pranati Nayak with coach Ashok Mishra

But the road has not been smooth. In 2026, injury forced her to miss the national championships. Instead of allowing another setback to define her season, Nayak returned strongly at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Tashkent in May, winning silver in vault with a score of 13.025.That comeback is important because Nayak’s career has increasingly become about finding a way forward after difficult moments. Her recent Commonwealth Games experience in Glasgow also left her disappointed, but rather than allowing the setback to linger, she has turned her attention towards Nagoya. The Asian Games offer another chance to get her routines right on a major international stage.

More than a gymnast

Away from competition, Nayak has spoken about the importance of meditation, discipline and managing pressure. She also mentors younger gymnasts, passing on lessons from a career that has already included an Olympics, Asian Games appearances and multiple international medals. That may be the most unusual part of her story. When Nayak first left home to pursue gymnastics, the destination could hardly have been guaranteed. There was no promise of an Olympic appearance or a long international career. There was only the decision to keep training.More than a decade later, she is still making that choice.

Pranati Nayak

Nagoya will bring another challenge. The vault remains her speciality, but she will also compete in the all-around event. A medal would add another chapter to an already long career. But for Nayak, the Asian Games are also about something more personal, proving that the sacrifices made by a young girl who left home to chase gymnastics were worth it.At her fourth Asian Games, she is no longer the teenager who had to leave everything familiar behind. She is the veteran who has survived the injuries, the disappointments and the changing generations of Indian gymnastics and has kept coming back. For Pranati Nayak, perhaps that is the victory that matters most.

Source link

Pranati Nayak.
