According to Sotheby’s, the necklace was created from an antique diamond and sapphire brooch gifted to Diana by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, as a wedding present. The timing made the appearance even more powerful. Charles’ admission of infidelity had been revealed in an ITV documentary watched by around 13 million people across Britain.Rather than retreat from the intense media scrutiny surrounding her marriage, Diana stepped into the spotlight looking confident and self-assured – and the image quickly became one of the defining moments of her public life.

‘Fashion can be a language when words fail’

Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s Global Head of Handbags and Fashion, said Diana instinctively understood the power of clothing.“Fashion can be a language when words fail or are simply not enough. Princess Diana understood that instinctively,” Halimi said in a statement.“She walked into a moment in which so much of her story was being told for her and, through what she chose to wear, reclaimed the narrative for herself,” she added.Halimi said the dress ultimately represented far more than the scandal surrounding the evening.“What has endured across the decades is not the scandal surrounding that evening, but Princess Diana’s show of confidence and self-possession,” she said. She also described the moment as a landmark in the history of fashion, saying it gave people — particularly women – permission to use clothing “as a shield, a weapon or both.”

Diana almost didn’t wear the daring black gown

Interestingly, the dress had been sitting in Diana’s wardrobe for around three years before its famous outing.Designer Christina Stambolian revealed in the 2013 Channel 4 documentary Princess Diana’s Dresses: The Auction that Diana had initially considered the design too daring. But on the night of the Vanity Fair dinner, she made the impulsive decision to wear it.Her former stylist Anna Harvey said Diana “wanted to look a million dollars” when she stepped out in the gown. The decision transformed what could have been another evening dress into an enduring symbol of independence and confidence.

Princess Diana sold the dress months before her death

<img decoding="async" alt="Princess Diana’s famous “revenge dress” was last auctioned in June 1997, just two months before her death." msid="134032782" imgsize="1248180" resizemode="4" width="" title="Princess Diana’s famous “revenge dress” was last auctioned in June 1997, just two months before her death.
