The name \u201corangutan\u201d comes from Malay and Indonesian words meaning \u201cperson of the forest.\u201d Their survival is closely tied to tropical rainforests, where they spend much of their lives in trees and feed mainly on fruits, leaves and other vegetation.Let\u2019s dig in to find out what exactly happened and how they got there.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the Odisha Forest Department rescued five young orangutans that had been abandoned in a casuarina plantation in the Udayapur-Talsari forest area of Balasore district. Forest staff found the animals during a routine patrol in the Udayapur section of the Jaleswar Range.According to The Hindu report, the animals, aged between six months and a year, comprise three males and two females. Regional Chief Conservator of Forests Prakash Chand Gogineni confirmed the numbers directly, saying, according to Gogineni, “We have rescued all of them. Of the five, three are male, and two are female.”What makes this case unusual is that orangutans have no natural presence in India at all. They’re found only in the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, which means these animals had to have been brought into the country, almost certainly illegally.<\/p>\n Gogineni suspects the abandonment was linked to a smuggling attempt gone wrong, saying, according to him, “It appears to be a botched-up transit operation.” He added that the animals seem to have been brought to the area and then simply left behind in the plantation.Furthermore, DFO, Balasore, Indalkar Pratik Prakash told ANI, “They were small and not moving much, but were active and were provided with food. They were rescued and brought to the section office. We estimate that they may have been released there last night or early this morning. While smuggling remains a possibility, there is no conclusive evidence yet. Since their natural habitat is tropical rainforests, they could not have migrated there naturally, indicating possible human intervention. Investigations are underway to determine how they arrived there… “At this stage, officials don’t yet know exactly where the orangutans entered the country or who was responsible. Gogineni said the department has no leads yet on the point of entry along the coast, and confirmed that a case is being registered under the Wildlife Protection Act while the investigation moves forward.Odisha’s Forest and Environment Minister, Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia, said a separate team has been sent to the Badapai\u2013Ranakatha area specifically to piece together how the animals ended up there and to identify anyone who might be involved, adding that the matter remains under active investigation.<\/p>\n The rescued orangutans, showing no visible injuries, have been moved to Nandankanan Zoological Park for a full medical check-up.
