The structure had already been declared dangerous by the municipal corporation on March 31. Police had also been asked to stop the work.Yet, before the civic action could be completed, the building came crashing down.Four years later, on September 6, 2026, another building collapsed in the same south Delhi neighbourhood. This time, the five-storey structure housed a student paying guest accommodation. At least seven people were killed and several others injured.The two incidents are separated by four years but by only a few metres \u2014 and the 2022 collapse now offers an uncomfortable glimpse into the warnings that had already existed about the dangers of construction and structural alterations in Satya Niketan.<\/p>\n Rescue ops at Satya Niketan building collapse site in Delhi<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n Delhi Fire Services received a call around 1.25pm reporting that a three-storey building in Satya Niketan had collapsed. At least five labourers were initially feared trapped beneath the rubble.Police, fire services, the National Disaster Response Force and the power distribution company launched a rescue operation. Five trapped labourers were eventually pulled out and taken to hospital.<\/p>\n Tragedy in Satya Niketan: 2022 Building Collapse<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Two of them \u2014 Naseem, 35, and Bilal, 40 \u2014 died. Four others were injured.But the collapse was not entirely without warning.According to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the building had been declared dangerous on March 31, nearly a month before the collapse. The civic body had issued a notice to the owner against carrying out additions and alterations to the property.Police intervention had also been sought to stop the work.<\/p>\n Rescue ops at Satya Niketan building collapse site in Delhi<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n The building was around 25 years old and stood on a 90-square-yard plot. According to the civic body, the owner was carrying out additions and alterations when the structure suddenly collapsed.The SDMC mayor at the time, Mukkesh Suryaan, said construction was being carried out without permission and promised an inquiry into the role of the owner and officials, if any lapses were found.An SDMC official, however, said the civic body had followed the procedure prescribed under the rules.The official said the corporation was waiting for the notice period to end and that proceedings had been completed only days before the collapse. Action with the help of police had been planned for the following week.The building collapsed before that action could happen.<\/p>\n Building collapses in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n Satya Niketan, close to Delhi University\u2019s South Campus, has long been a densely built residential and student hub.The area is made up of narrow lanes lined with houses, paying guest accommodations, eateries and small commercial establishments. Many of the properties are old, while some have undergone additions or alterations over the years.After the 2022 collapse, residents had pointed to the structural vulnerabilities of buildings in the area.Locals said many houses had been constructed without pillars and that additional floors had subsequently been added to old structures.The collapse also highlighted the pressure placed on such buildings by the area’s transformation into a major student accommodation hub.The victims in 2022 were labourers working at the site.Naseem had worked as a labourer in Delhi for nearly two decades and was survived by his wife, four daughters and a son in Bihar.Bilal had been working at the site for around 20 days. His brother said Bilal had worked in Delhi for five years and his wife and five children were in Bihar.For their families, the collapse was not simply a story about a building or a municipal notice. It was the loss of breadwinners who had gone to work that afternoon.<\/p>\n On September 6, 2026, Satya Niketan again became a rescue zone.A five-storey building housing students as paying guests collapsed in the afternoon, trapping people beneath tonnes of concrete.The structure came down in what fire officials described as a pancake collapse, with floors crashing onto one another and leaving slabs stacked across the building.<\/p>\n The rescue operation was complicated by the weight and instability of the collapsed structure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Students who lived in the building alleged it had been vacated the previous year for being too run-down to inhabit safely. The MCD, students say, later cleared the same structure to operate as a 75-bed PG accommodation anyway.At least seven people died.Students were among those trapped. Families rushed to the site and hospitals searching for relatives. Residents, student groups and emergency personnel worked through the rubble as rescue teams tried to reach those still alive.Some trapped students were able to communicate from beneath the debris.The rescue operation was complicated by the weight and instability of the collapsed structure. Fire officials said heavy machinery could not immediately be used because it could endanger people trapped underneath.Once again, questions about construction and structural safety quickly surfaced.Investigators began examining whether repair or renovation work had been carried out in the building, including work in the basement and ground floor, and whether such activity contributed to the collapse.MCD officials also began examining the building’s structural condition and its use as a PG accommodation.<\/p>\n The two collapses cannot automatically be treated as the same failure.There is no basis to say that the 2022 incident directly caused the 2026 collapse, or that the later building was necessarily the same structure that had been declared dangerous four years earlier.But the proximity of the two incidents makes the earlier case difficult to ignore.In 2022, authorities had already encountered a dangerous building in Satya Niketan where construction work was allegedly continuing despite civic intervention.<\/p>\n Building collapses in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n A notice had been issued.Police had been asked to stop the work.The civic body said proceedings were underway.But the building collapsed before the planned enforcement action could take place.Four years later, another structure in the same neighbourhood collapsed, killing students and workers and once again putting construction, structural safety and oversight under scrutiny.The question, therefore, is larger than one building.It is whether the lessons from the first collapse translated into sustained enforcement across a neighbourhood where old residential structures have increasingly been converted into student accommodation and commercial premises.<\/p>\n The 2022 tragedy had already exposed a familiar problem in Delhi’s built environment: Authorities may identify dangerous structures and issue notices, but the gap between identifying a violation and physically preventing unsafe work can prove fatal.The official explanation in 2022 was that the prescribed process was being followed and that enforcement action was imminent.Now, after seven deaths in another Satya Niketan collapse, the old question has returned with greater force.How many dangerous structures are identified?How many notices are issued?How many are actually vacated, sealed or demolished before tragedy strikes?And most importantly, when a building is declared dangerous, who ensures that people do not continue working or living inside it while paperwork runs its course?Four years ago, Satya Niketan gave warning.Four years later, the neighbourhood has suffered another deadly collapse.The distance between the two sites may be measured in meters.
