(AI Image)

At campuses where laptops, case studies, presentations and deadlines are part of everyday life, students are finding an unusual way to break the routine — by leaving their conventional bags behind. The “No-Bag Day” trend is gaining attention on Indian higher-education campuses, with students at IIT Bombay and IIM Lucknow recently turning an ordinary day on campus into a playful exercise in creativity, humour and camaraderie. The rule is simple: no conventional backpacks or laptop bags. Everything else is open to interpretation.

Buckets, umbrellas and even bicycles

At IIT Bombay, students marked their last lecture in April with a No-Bag Day, arriving with buckets, chairs, cardboard boxes, clothes hangers, umbrellas and even a bicycle to carry their classroom essentials. What could have been an ordinary final lecture became a memorable campus moment, with students replacing the familiar backpack with objects rarely associated with classrooms. At IIM Lucknow, students from Section F of the PGP batch recently organised their own student-led No-Bag Day. The institute clarified that it was not an official activity but an initiative by students looking for a brief break from the routine of classes, case studies, presentations and deadlines.

Why leave the bag behind?

For participants, the activity is about more than simply carrying books and laptops in unusual containers.“A bag is such an ordinary part of student life that we rarely question it,” PGP students Ashwin Narayan and Srivatsh Agarwal said while describing the activity as a small experiment in creativity. The exercise encouraged students to look differently at everyday objects. Drawers, buckets, umbrellas, cardboard boxes, laundry bags, pillow covers, bed tables, kettles and clothes hangers suddenly acquired a new purpose. The underlying idea is simple: change one familiar rule, and people are forced to think differently.

A break from academic routine

Higher-education campuses can often be defined by packed schedules and constant academic pressure. For students juggling assignments, examinations, internships and placements, a light-hearted activity such as No-Bag Day can offer a brief change of pace. The appeal also lies in its accessibility. Unlike large college festivals or events requiring extensive planning, the format needs little preparation and virtually no budget. One rule is enough — leave the conventional bag at home.

From school spirit activity to Indian campuses

The idea itself is not entirely new. Internationally, “Anything But a Bag Day” has long been used as a school or campus spirit activity, encouraging students to replace conventional bags with creative alternatives. In India, the trend has increasingly appeared on college campuses and social media. One widely reported example came from Chennai’s Women’s Christian College in 2023, where students used pressure cookers, laundry baskets, buckets, cardboard boxes and pillow covers. Now, with IIT Bombay and IIM Lucknow joining the growing list of campuses experimenting with the idea, No-Bag Day appears to be finding a place in Indian campus culture. For students, perhaps that is the real attraction: sometimes, breaking a routine does not require a major event. Sometimes, all it takes is leaving the backpack at home.

Source link

No-Bag Day trend takes Indian campuses by storm as students turn everyday objects into bags.
