With Krishna Janmashtami being observed on Friday, September 4, investors may be wondering whether the festival will bring a trading holiday for the Indian stock market. Janmashtami is a holiday for banks and government offices in several parts of the country, but the NSE and BSE follow their own trading holiday calendars.So, is the stock market closed today? No. The NSE and BSE will remain open for regular trading on September 4. Investors can buy and sell shares and trade equity derivatives during normal market hours, as Janmashtami is not listed as a trading holiday in the 2026 market calendar.Unlike some festival holidays, there is also no settlement holiday for the stock market on September 4. Trading and the associated clearing and settlement processes will follow the regular schedule.The distinction is important. A trading holiday means the stock exchanges are shut, while a settlement holiday allows trading to continue but pauses the clearing and settlement of eligible trades.
