King Felipe VI, a direct descendant of Philip V, the grandson of Louis XIV, still sits on the Spanish throne. On France\u2019s national day, it was Spain who ended <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-dictator-kylian-mbappe-dispatches-morocco-with-disdain-as-belgium-look-to-bring-the-pain-to-spain\/articleshow\/132305597.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Dictator\u2019 Mbappe\u2019s reign<\/a> with a clinical performance that left <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-do-france-have-the-most-terrifying-world-cup-attack-of-all-time\/articleshow\/132111367.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the World Cup\u2019s best attacking team<\/a> stunned.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/fifa-world-cup-kylian-mbappe-takes-aim-at-tactics-after-sloppy-france-crash-out-to-spain\/articleshow\/132403646.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rayan Cherki<\/a> sounded a little like the enigmatic Eric Cantona, who once said he did not play against a team but against the idea of defeat. Their second was sublime and while Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro will receive the goalscoring plaudits, it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-france-argentina-spain-and-england-a-not-so-brief-guide-to-the-world-cup-2026-semifinalists\/articleshow\/132369477.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish midfield, administered by Rodri<\/a>, that ensured France had to wait until the 82nd minute to register their first shot on target.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>Indeed, one wry columnist for <span class=\"em\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">The Times<\/span>, after watching Pedro Porro and Cristian Romero excel at this World Cup, wondered how Spurs had spent much of the past two seasons battling relegation. Analysing Spuritis, however, is beyond the scope of this column.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>The 19-year-old wunderkind Lamine Yamal had promised that <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-world-cup-semifinal-preview-france-vs-spain-can-mbappe-and-co-be-stopped\/articleshow\/132396008.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain would play without fear<\/a>, and that is what they did against Les Bleus.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/spain-vs-france-fifa-world-cup-sf-match-result-lamine-yamal-shines-as-spain-outclass-mbappes-france-to-reach-second-wc-final\/articleshow\/132401032.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the spot<\/a> after Lucas Digne\u2019s pub-side hack took out Yamal. Spain nearly had a second after Maignan\u2019s attempted clearance fell to \u00c1lex Baena, who found Olmo. <!-- -->His delicate backheel released Yamal, who drilled the ball towards Fabi\u00e1n Ruiz, only for Upamecano to produce a last-ditch block. It was also <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/spain-vs-france-fifa-world-cup-sf-match-result-lamine-yamal-shines-as-spain-outclass-mbappes-france-to-reach-second-wc-final\/articleshow\/132401032.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain\u2019s third successive semi-final victory over France<\/a>, following Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League, turning what had once been an evenly matched rivalry into a recurring French nightmare.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"56\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">How Spain stopped France<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"58\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-world-cup-semifinal-preview-france-vs-spain-can-mbappe-and-co-be-stopped\/articleshow\/132396008.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain\u2019s solution began several yards away from Mbappe<\/a>. In older days, coaches tasked individual players with stopping a talisman. Sir Alex Ferguson used Park Ji-sung to shadow Andrea Pirlo during Manchester United\u2019s Champions League tie against AC Milan in 2010. Mourinho used Esteban Cambiasso as part of Inter Milan\u2019s plan to \u2018arrest\u2019 Messi in the 2010 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>Luis de la Fuente did nothing of that sort. Instead, Spain crowded the areas through which Mbappe usually received the ball. <!-- -->Rodri remained in the centre, Fabi\u00e1n Ruiz hunted loose balls and Dani Olmo dropped into midfield whenever France attempted to play through Aur\u00e9lien Tchouam\u00e9ni, Adrien Rabiot or Michael Olise.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"65\"\/>Mbappe, too, pointed to the pressing mismatch: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/fifa-world-cup-kylian-mbappe-takes-aim-at-tactics-after-sloppy-france-crash-out-to-spain\/articleshow\/132403646.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right from the start, we were pressing three against two<\/a>\u2026 and we messed up there. Against Spain, you have to press man for man.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"69\"\/>The space between Spain\u2019s midfielders and defenders remained tiny, with Rodri and Fabi\u00e1n closing receivers in the middle, while the full-backs and the nearest midfielder protected the return pass inside from the wing. <!-- -->This left France\u2019s technically gifted players isolated and unable to form what Einstein called \u201cspooky action at a distance\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"73\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OFFSIDE: YAMAL VS MBAPPE\" msid=\"132408933\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-132408933\/offside-yamal-vs-mbappe.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"75\"\/>To put this in context, Olise and Mbappe did not exchange a single pass in the first half, while Olise lost possession 20 times in the first 70 minutes. Mbappe did not attempt his first shot until the 67th minute, while Ousmane Demb\u00e9l\u00e9\u2019s first effort arrived during second-half stoppage time. <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/fifa-wc-2026-spain-make-world-cup-history-with-sixth-clean-sheet-as-they-outclass-france-2-0-to-reach-the-final\/articleshow\/132403492.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France produced only 0.3 expected goals<\/a>, their lowest figure in a World Cup match since such data began to be recorded.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"80\"\/>Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte handled Mbappe\u2019s movements intelligently. Cubarsi stepped towards him when he tried to receive with his back to goal, while Laporte protected the space behind. Marc Cucurella repeatedly moved across from the left when France tried to create an overload, including a vital deflection from one of Mbappe\u2019s few dangerous attempts. <!-- -->Unai Simon also raced outside his penalty area during the first half to clear before the French captain could exploit the space behind Spain\u2019s defensive line.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"84\"\/>France had planned to press Spain high and prevent them from establishing their passing rhythm. Instead, the French front four pressed at different moments rather than as one unit, allowing Rodri, Fabi\u00e1n and the Spanish centre-backs to pass around the first wave.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"87\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Did Deschamps\u2019 attacking gamble backfire?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"89\"\/>Much of the footballing world had celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-world-cup-2026-mbappe-ronaldo-and-trump-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly\/articleshow\/132289160.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France\u2019s gunslinger football with four attackers<\/a>, but that approach proved disastrous against a side as comfortable on the ball as Spain.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"93\"\/>Deschamps used a 4-2-3-1 with Tchouam\u00e9ni and Rabiot behind Demb\u00e9l\u00e9, Olise and Barcola, with Mbappe leading the line. That left the midfield pair to screen the defence, close Rodri and Fabi\u00e1n, track Olmo between the lines and cover the full-backs. <!-- -->Spain\u2019s midfield three kept giving them one problem too many.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"97\"\/>There had been speculation that Deschamps would remove one attacker and use Manu Kon\u00e9 alongside Tchouam\u00e9ni and Rabiot in a 4-3-3. He did not. When Kon\u00e9 appeared at half-time, he replaced the booked Rabiot rather than joining him, so France retained the double pivot. The attacking quartet stayed on, but Spain\u2019s control meant they rarely received the ball in useful areas.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"100\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Spain France WCup Soccer\" msid=\"132408839\" width=\"\" title=\"France's Michael Olise (11) tackles Spain's Rodri (16) during the World Cup semifinal soccer match between France and Spain in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, Tuesday, July 14, 2026. (AP Photo\/Sam Hodde)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"102\"\/>That was a departure from Deschamps\u2019 successful tournament formula.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"104\"\/>In 2018, Kant\u00e9 and Pogba were supported by Blaise Matuidi, nominally a left-sided player who moved infield and defended as a third midfielder. In 2022, Tchouam\u00e9ni and Rabiot had Antoine Griezmann dropping deep, pressing and tracking runners. Neither side literally fielded three defensive midfielders, but both had three players doing midfield work. <!-- -->Against Spain, France had two, and both were overrun.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"108\"\/>France were also dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/offside-kylian-mbappe-and-france-show-they-can-play-ugly-to-win-in-paraguay-showdown\/articleshow\/132191817.cms\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustained adversity for the first time at this World Cup<\/a>. Cherki acknowledged as much afterwards: \u201cMaybe when it\u2019s too easy, we think we\u2019re above the rabble.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"112\"\/>Once France fell behind, their problems multiplied. Rabiot, already booked, committed another poor challenge before the interval and risked being sent off. Saliba, who had been playing through pain during the tournament, lasted only half an hour. <!-- -->Digne remained exposed against Yamal in a contest that increasingly resembled a mismatch.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"116\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Numbers and minders<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"118\"\/>The most revealing statistic was Spain\u2019s possession: 50.9 per cent, their lowest share in a World Cup match since 2002.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"120\"\/>This was a more muscular Spanish performance than the familiar caricature of endless passing. Spain attempted 22 tackles to France\u2019s 14 and won 55.9 per cent of all duels. France won only 32 per cent of the aerial contests, their lowest proportion at a World Cup for four decades. <!-- -->Rodri won 11 of his 15 duels, while Fabi\u00e1n won five of six and regained possession seven times.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"124\"\/>Spain were happy to let sections of the match become slow. They passed when the pass was available, committed tactical fouls when France threatened to break and refused to turn the semi-final into the transition contest Mbappe, Demb\u00e9l\u00e9 and Barcola wanted.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"126\"\/>Their attacking structure remained fluid. Oyarzabal dropped away from the centre-backs, Olmo appeared between midfield and defence, and Yamal stayed wide enough to isolate Digne. <!-- -->Porro could therefore advance from right-back when France\u2019s attention moved towards Yamal.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"130\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pedro Porro scores Spain's second goal\" msid=\"132408878\" width=\"\" title=\"Spain's Pedro Porro scores his side's second goal during the World Cup semifinal soccer match between France and Spain in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Porro moved forward, exchanged passes with Olmo and continued his run into the space behind France\u2019s left side. Olmo, despite being knocked off balance, returned the ball perfectly and Porro finished calmly.
