That is why Pettersson continues to surface as a logical, though expensive, target.FanSided’s Thomas Williams believes the Maple Leafs have a rare opportunity to buy low on a player whose value has slipped after two disappointing seasons.\u201cThe Toronto Maple Leafs have a unique opportunity to get a very good center for almost nothing in the trade market,\u201d Williams wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s a slight risk but the Leafs need to trade for Elias Pettersson to truly do as much as they can this summer. \u2026\u201cPettersson isn\u2019t what he once was, but the pressure to be the No. 1 center would be off of him if he were to be on the Leafs. In Toronto, he would most likely be in the middle six, with John Tavares taking the other center job, and insulated by some very talented players like an Easton Cowan or a Matthew Knies or a William Nylander, or even if we want to get crazy, having Jack Roslovic or Colton Sissons up on his wing. Pettersson’s contract remains the biggest obstacle. His $11.6 million annual cap hit runs through the 2031-32 season, making any deal complicated.For Toronto, creating enough cap space would likely require moving significant money off the books. Morgan Rielly has frequently been mentioned as a possible trade piece, while placing Max Domi on long-term injured reserve could also help create flexibility if circumstances allow.The length of Pettersson’s deal means whichever team acquires him would be betting on a return to his previous form rather than paying only for recent production.<\/p>\n
