In Toronto, he would most likely be in the middle six, with John Tavares taking the other center job, and insulated by some very talented players like an Easton Cowan or a Matthew Knies or a William Nylander, or even if we want to get crazy, having Jack Roslovic or Colton Sissons up on his wing. It’s much better than the likes of wingers he’s had in Vancouver the past couple of seasons.”A move would give Toronto another skilled center while allowing John Tavares to slide into a more favorable third-line role. It could also provide insurance if Auston Matthews’ long-term future ever becomes uncertain.

What insiders are saying about the trade rumors

The biggest reason this rumor has gained momentum is Vancouver’s reported willingness to move Pettersson.Canucks insider Thomas Drance recently suggested the organization is focused more on creating salary flexibility than landing a blockbuster return.“Darnell Nurse trade return as a best-case scenario,” Drance wrote. “In that trade, Edmonton was able to clear the balance of Nurse’s contract, and there’s massive value in that. The Oilers also received a young defender at the tail end of his entry-level contract, who isn’t tracking to be much more than a depth contributor going forward, but still has some level of possible upside.“That would represent a solid return for the Canucks for Pettersson, even if they would likely be better off taking back an inefficient contract to get a more valuable future in the exchange.”That approach suggests Vancouver may prioritize financial relief over acquiring elite young talent.

Contract details and salary cap implications

Pettersson’s contract remains the biggest obstacle. His $11.6 million annual cap hit runs through the 2031-32 season, making any deal complicated. For Toronto, creating enough cap space would likely require moving significant money off the books. Morgan Rielly has frequently been mentioned as a possible trade piece, while placing Max Domi on long-term injured reserve could also help create flexibility if circumstances allow. The length of Pettersson’s deal means whichever team acquires him would be betting on a return to his previous form rather than paying only for recent production.

How the trade could impact both teams

Toronto would be making a calculated gamble on a player who scored 102 points in 2022-23 but has since produced 89, 45 and 51 points over the following seasons. Last year, he finished with 15 goals and 36 assists in 74 games. If Pettersson rediscovers his 80 to 90-point level, the Maple Leafs could solve a major roster need without sacrificing their championship window. Vancouver, meanwhile, would gain long-term salary relief and additional roster flexibility as it reshapes its core.

Source link

NHL Trade Rumors (Getty Images) The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to be mentioned in trade discussions as they look for another impact forward before the new NHL season.
