Two powerhouse performers, two future world champions, two wrestlers who entered WWE around the same time. Yet despite their careers repeatedly crossing paths, Lesnar and Batista never shared the ring in a singles match. Both men joined WWE in 2000 and were sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling, then the company’s developmental territory. They made their main-roster debuts in 2002, though WWE took them in very different directions from there.Lesnar was pushed as a once-in-a-generation athlete almost immediately. Batista took a slower route, building towards becoming one of the most important members of Evolution.Timing, departures and a string of creative decisions meant the collision never came, even when their paths seemed destined to cross at the peak of both careers.

2000-2004: Two future stars arrive

Lesnar and Batista arrived in WWE at roughly the same time and quickly showed why the company viewed them as major prospects.Lesnar’s rise was spectacular. He won the 2002 King of the Ring, then defeated The Rock at SummerSlam to become the youngest WWE Champion in history at just 25.Batista’s journey was more gradual. He became the muscle of Evolution, standing alongside Triple H, Ric Flair and Randy Orton, and that role helped him develop into a major singles star and eventually put him on the path towards a world championship. Two enormous attractions, developing on separate tracks. A Lesnar-Batista match was almost impossible not to imagine.

2004-2010: Lesnar leaves as Batista takes over

The first major obstacle arrived in 2004. After WrestleMania 20, Lesnar left WWE, a decision shaped by the demands of the company’s travel schedule and his desire to pursue other interests. His departure came just as he appeared destined to become one of WWE’s defining stars. The company did not have to look far for another powerhouse to fill some of that void. Batista continued his rise and won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21, going on to become one of WWE’s biggest attractions with major programmes against Triple H, The Undertaker, Edge and John Cena. For years, Batista faced virtually every major name on the roster. There was just one obvious exception. Brock Lesnar.Batista left WWE in 2010, closing another chapter of his wrestling career. Then came the development that made the hypothetical matchup even more intriguing.Lesnar had moved into mixed martial arts and become UFC heavyweight champion. By the time he returned to WWE, he was no longer simply a former WWE champion, he was a legitimate combat-sports superstar.Batista also explored mixed martial arts during his own time away, though he never came close to Lesnar’s level of success in the sport. That shared connection only made the idea of Batista vs Lesnar more appealing. Both were huge athletes. Both had become legitimate main-event attractions. Both had experience outside professional wrestling. WWE still had to wait for the right opportunity.

2012-2014: The biggest missed opportunity

Lesnar made his shocking return the night after WrestleMania 28, attacking John Cena. From that point on, WWE treated him as a special attraction, used sparingly and against the biggest names available, including Cena and Triple H.Then, in January 2014, Batista returned. He won the Royal Rumble and earned a place in the WrestleMania 30 main event, challenging for the WWE World Championship. This was arguably the clearest window WWE ever had to make the match happen. The company could have built towards Lesnar winning the title and Batista challenging him at WrestleMania. Instead, it went in another direction entirely, putting Batista into a Triple Threat match against Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. That decision produced one of WrestleMania’s most memorable moments. It also meant another opportunity for Lesnar and Batista passed by.Lesnar, for his part, defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30, ending his legendary 21-0 WrestleMania streak. Fans can only wonder, in hindsight, what might have happened had WWE chosen a different route.

2014-2019: Lesnar dominates while Batista moves to Hollywood

Following WrestleMania 30, Lesnar became one of the most dominant performers of his generation. He destroyed John Cena at SummerSlam, captured more world championships, and established himself as someone WWE could build an entire major event around.Batista, meanwhile, increasingly focused on his acting career. His role as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy turned him into a Hollywood name, and wrestling was no longer his priority. The two men continued to exist in completely different worlds.

2019: Batista’s final chapter

Batista returned to WWE in 2019 for one final major programme, this time with Triple H. The two faced each other in a No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 35, which Batista lost before retiring from professional wrestling. It was a fitting ending to a career that included four World Heavyweight Championship reigns, two WWE Championship reigns and Royal Rumble victories in 2005 and 2014.One name was still missing from his list of major opponents. Lesnar.

2026: Lesnar’s retirement

Lesnar’s own career has now reached its conclusion. The 49-year-old recently confirmed on The Pat McAfee Show that his appearance at WWE SummerSlam against Oba Femi would be the final match of his professional wrestling career.Lesnar said he had felt he was finished earlier in the year at WrestleMania, when he removed his boots and gloves in the ring, but ultimately decided to have one final Hell in a Cell match in Minneapolis. His career closes with an extraordinary list of achievements. Lesnar became a 12-time world champion, winning seven WWE/WWE World Championships and three Universal Championships. He remains the youngest wrestler to win the WWE Championship, a feat he achieved at SummerSlam 2002 at 25.He also won the 2002 King of the Ring, the 2003 and 2022 Royal Rumbles and the 2019 Money in the Bank match. Most famously, he ended The Undertaker’s 21-0 WrestleMania streak in 2014.

Source link

Brock Lesnar, Batista and Vince Mcmahon (Agency Image) Batista vs Brock Lesnar remains one of WWE‘s biggest missed opportunities. On paper, the matchup had everything Vince McMahon could have wanted.
