His father left when he was four years old and was in and out of prison. His mother, Felicia, and grandmother, Bonnie King, raised Young and his two sisters in Houston\u2019s Hiram Clarke neighborhood.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>According to Sports Illustrated, Felicia worked long hours as a home health aide and also spent much of her time partying. Surrounded by \u201cdrinking, partying, drugs, and fighting,\u201d Young\u2019s family struggled with poverty and lived day to day.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>To escape the chaos around him, Young found a safe place in a tree. He would climb to the top and think about his next goal. Eventually, that goal became football at Madison High School.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>Young put up unbelievable numbers during his senior year, recording 5,100 total yards and 59 touchdowns. College recruiters sent him letters every day, and his dream was to play for Florida State.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Vince Young wanted Florida State but <keyword id=\"1450645\" type=\"General\" weightage=\"20\" keywordseo=\"texas-longhorns\" source=\"Orion\">Texas Longhorns<\/keyword> chose him<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Young wanted Florida State, but there was one problem: the team wanted him to play wide receiver.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>That terribly broke his heart.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/>Then came the Texas Longhorns.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>Their head coach at the time, Mack Brown, was doing everything he could to take the team to another level, but the Longhorns had repeatedly failed to get over the hump. Then came Young\u2019s opportunity to change that.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>Before recruiting him, Brown wanted to learn more about Young\u2019s background, so he visited his home. Young\u2019s grandmother was skeptical.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>\u201cI don\u2019t know that Texas is gonna play a Black quarterback,\u201d she told Brown.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Brown\u2019s response was simple: \u201cI\u2019m gonna play the best quarterback.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Young was thrilled that Texas did not want him to become a wide receiver. The Longhorns wanted him to play quarterback.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>From then on, there was no stopping him.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Vince Young\u2019s legendary National Championship performance against USC<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Young eventually led Texas to the national championship game against the two-time reigning champions, the USC Trojans. USC was led by Heisman Trophy winners Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush and entered the game on a 34-game winning streak.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>But Young delivered one of the greatest performances in college football history.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>He threw for 267 yards, rushed for another 200 yards, and accounted for three touchdowns. <!-- -->His most memorable moment came on fourth down, when he scored the game-winning touchdown with just 19 seconds remaining.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/>Young was named the game\u2019s MVP and cemented his place in University of Texas history, delivering the Longhorns their first national title since 1970.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>In the Netflix documentary called \u201cUntold: The Testimony of Vince Young\u201d, Young said he believed he was destined for that moment.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"46\"\/>\u201cTo be that quarterback of that team at that moment, from all the trials and tribulations I\u2019ve been through, was just godly stuff. <!-- -->Godly things. I was meant for that moment. I was meant to be there,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/>That year, following the national championship, Young entered the <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/nfl\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL<\/a> Draft.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>From Texas hero to the <keyword id=\"224563\" type=\"General\" weightage=\"20\" keywordseo=\"tennessee-titans\" source=\"Orion\">Tennessee Titans<\/keyword>\u2019 No 3 overall pick<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Tennessee Titans selected Young with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"58\"\/>However, his arrival in Tennessee was not without controversy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/>According to the documentary, then-Titans owner Bud Adams drove the decision to draft Young, while head coach Jeff Fisher reportedly opposed the selection.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"63\"\/>Young had enjoyed a strong coach-quarterback relationship at Texas with Mack Brown. It even led to a national championship title. In the NFL, however, his relationship with Fisher became increasingly fractured.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"65\"\/>Fisher did not simply disagree with drafting Young; according to Young, the tension became evident throughout his time with the Titans.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"67\"\/>During Young\u2019s rookie season, Fisher instructed the team plane to leave without him after he arrived late for a flight.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"70\"\/>\u201cI had just a few rules. The rules were pretty simple,\u201d Fisher explained in the documentary. \u201cSo, if you had a problem with that, then you had a problem with me. Vince had distractions. He\u2019d miss treatment.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"72\"\/>Despite the troubled relationship, Young had an impressive rookie season. He helped the Titans finish 8-5 in games he started and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"75\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>The 2008 incident that deepened the rift<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Another tumultuous event further damaged the relationship between Young and Fisher.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"78\"\/>After suffering a knee injury, Young missed a medical examination the following day. He left home with his licensed firearm and without his phone.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"80\"\/>His concerned mother contacted the Titans and Fisher, who then involved the team therapist and Nashville police amid fears that Young might be suicidal.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"82\"\/>However, Young later told Sports Illustrated in 2017 that his gun was unloaded and locked in the trunk of his vehicle. <!-- -->He said he was safe and was simply watching football with his friend and teammate, Bo Scaife, while the team was trying to locate him.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"86\"\/>Young said Fisher called and asked whether he was suicidal. Young said he was fine and simply wanted some space.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"88\"\/>Fisher asked him to come to the team facility so he could make sure he was okay. However, when Young arrived, he found members of the press waiting there.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"90\"\/>The incident further damaged the already troubled coach-quarterback relationship.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"93\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>The locker room fallout that ended Vince Young\u2019s Titans career<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The relationship worsened again during the 2010 season.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"96\"\/>Young tore a tendon in his right thumb during a game, but Fisher refused to let him return to the field. In response, Young threw his shoulder pads and helmet and stormed out of the locker room.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"98\"\/>\u201cFisher didn\u2019t let me back into the facilities no more,\u201d Young said in the documentary. \u201cSo that\u2019s when I knew I was done in Tennessee.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"100\"\/>Young added that it was not how he wanted his career with the Titans to end.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"103\"\/>\u201cIt was definitely not how I wanted to end my career with the Titans, \u2018cause they were a team that I really wanted to play with and win a Super Bowl with.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"105\"\/>The Titans eventually took matters into their own hands. Fisher was fired in January 2011, and Young was released a few months later in July.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"107\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Vince Young\u2019s brief NFL stops and early retirement<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Young later had brief stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Cleveland Browns before officially calling it quits in 2014, at just 31 years old. <!-- -->Today, players are playing beyond 35 and straight into their early 40s, like Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"113\"\/>His NFL career included two Pro Bowl selections, and he finished with a 31-19 record as a starting quarterback.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"115\"\/>But football was not the only challenge Young faced after his rise to fame in college football.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"117\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Bankruptcy, lawsuits, and financial recovery<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Young filed for bankruptcy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"120\"\/>According to FOX Sports, Young sued his former financial adviser, Ronnie T. <!-- -->Peoples, and his former sports agent, Major L. Adams II.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"124\"\/>Young alleged that they had cheated him out of at least $5.5 million by forging his signatures, falsifying documents, and using a fake email address to secure loans and pay off Adams II\u2019s debts.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"126\"\/>\u201cI\u2019m over here trying to be the best athlete I can be, believing that I had some guys that I can trust to watch my back and doing what\u2019s in the best interest of me, but they were doing the total opposite,\u201d Young said in the documentary.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"129\"\/>The case was settled out of court in December 2013. A month later, Young filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"131\"\/>In a 2017 Sports Illustrated interview, Young said it took him three years to come out of debt and improve his financial situation.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"133\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Life after football<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to today, and Vince Young has returned to his alma mater.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"136\"\/>Since 2021, he has worked as a special assistant in the University of Texas athletic department.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"138\"\/>The former Texas Longhorns star has also built a family of his own. <!-- -->He is married to his high school sweetheart, Candice Young, and they share a son. Young is also the father of two daughters from previous relationships.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"142\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Vince Young as a father and his efforts to build a different legacy<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Young does not want to repeat the mistakes of his own father, who left him when he was four years old. Instead, he wants to be present-present for his children.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"145\"\/>When his daughter attended her first basketball camp in 2024, Young proudly cheered her on and shared the moment on Instagram.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"148\"\/>His son, Jordan \u201cJayman\u201d Young, is a junior at Kinkaid High School in Houston and also plays football. However, Young is determined not to put unnecessary pressure on him.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"150\"\/>Instead, the former NFL quarterback wants to help build his son\u2019s character and teach him how to be a professional from a young age. His goal is for college coaches to be impressed not only by his son as an athlete, but also by the person he becomes.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"153\"\/>From a difficult childhood in Houston to one of the greatest performances in college football history, a fractured NFL career, financial struggles, and eventual redemption, Vince Young\u2019s story has been anything but ordinary.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"156\"\/>He once climbed a tree to escape the chaos around him and dream about his next goal.
