Video triggers uproar\" title=\"A video shows Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation councillors taking an oath to share civic funds.\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Ta7d_ img_cptn\"><span title=\"A video shows Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation councillors taking an oath to share civic funds.\">A video shows Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation councillors taking an oath to share civic funds.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>MEERUT: A purported video showing Shahjahanpur municipal corporation councillors swearing on Gangajal and Quran to divide illegally gotten revenue from the civic body \u201cequally and fairly\u201d among themselves has triggered both a political and social media storm.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>The video has several councillors holding holy water in their hands and solemnly promising each other &#8212; sometimes even swearing on their mothers &#8212; as they discuss \u201cbatwara\u201d (division) and \u201callocation of shares\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Municipal commissioner Saumya Gurjar said she has \u201ctaken cognisance of the video\u201d and ordered the constitution of a team to investigate the matter.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>Of the 60 councillors in the civic body, 41 belong to the BJP, while the remaining are from other parties or are independents.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>Dhirendra Singh Chauhan, BJP councillor from ward 24 and one of those seen in the clip, denied any transgression. He told TOI, \u201cThe vow had nothing to do with revenues. Councillors had gathered at a birthday party in 2025 and the video was recorded after 40 councillors filed a complaint against a company working with the municipal corporation. Everyone actually vowed that no one would issue any document in favour of the company in future. Words have been doctored, and the actual context of the video changed before someone leaked it online on Tuesday.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>Opposition parties were quick to condemn what they called was a \u201cclear show of corruption\u201d. INC UP, the Congress party\u2019s X handle, tweeted: \u201cWhen looting under political patronage is so assured, it\u2019s pointless to expect public development. The public is watching!\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Samajwadi Party, too, posted on X: \u201cCouncillors in the Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation swear to share proceeds of corruption and support each other in the event of a scandal&#8230; \u201c<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>TOI has not independently verified the authenticity of the video.
