In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Sridhar Vembu said giving people more freedom to take initiative can create an energetic but sometimes chaotic work culture.<!-- --> Employees may disagree strongly with one another and constantly feel that things can be improved. \u201cThere is always the gnawing feeling of \u2018not good enough\u2019,\u201d Vembu wrote, explaining the trade-off between certainty and initiative in an organisation.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Sridhar Vembu on why freedom can feel \u2018chaotic\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/>In the post, Sridhar Vembu said highly metric-driven organisations often create a culture where employees wait for instructions from the top. Such workplaces can offer more predictability and certainty.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>However, he warned that this approach has its risks. \u201cUnless the top always knows how to set the right course, the org can be lost,\u201d Vembu wrote.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>On the other hand, an organisation where people are encouraged to take initiative can be less predictable. Employees with energy and strong ideas may disagree with each other, he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>\u201cSeize the initiative culture\u201d often feels chaotic, with lots of internal disagreements. There is always the gnawing feeling of \u201cnot good enough\u201d,\u201d Vembu wrote.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Sridhar Vembu: &#8216;Every smart programmer\u2019 thinks they can do better<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>The Zoho founder also used programmers as an example to explain why initiative-driven workplaces can see frequent disagreements.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>\u201cPeople who are full of energy and initiative often vehemently disagree with other,\u201d he wrote, adding: \u201cI joke about this: every smart programmer looks at another programmer&#8217;s code and thinks \u2018it sucks, I can do better\u2019!\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>According to Vembu, this is the trade-off companies need to understand when building their culture. <!-- -->A workplace can provide employees with comfortable certainty but risk losing their initiative. Alternatively, it can encourage people to take initiative while accepting the discomfort and disagreements that may come with it.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Here\u2019s the post shared by Sridhar Vembu<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>&#8220;On org culture: Do people wait for instructions from the top? Or do they seize the initiative and run?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>Highly metric driven orgs tend to produce the &#8220;wait for instructions from the top&#8221; culture and there is more predictability and certainty in that culture. <!-- -->Unless the top always knows how to set the right course, the org can be lost.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>&#8220;Seize the initiative culture&#8221; often feels chaotic, with lots of internal disagreements. There is always the gnawing feeling of &#8220;not good enough&#8221;. In a chaotic initiative-driven culture, the external environment (market) may have to provide the occasional discipline.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>People who are full of energy and initiative often vehemently disagree with other. I joke about this: every smart programmer looks at another programmer&#8217;s code and thinks &#8220;it sucks, I can do better&#8221;!<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>That is your trade-off in org cultures.
