Even years after the Road House star&#8217;s death in 2009 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, Lisa still becomes emotional when she remembers the first time they danced together.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/>The couple first met at Patrick&#8217;s mother Patsy Swayze&#8217;s dance studio in Houston, Texas. What started as dance rehearsals during their teenage years soon blossomed into a romance that lasted more than three decades.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>Looking back in the 2019 documentary I Am Patrick Swayze, Lisa recalled the first time they performed together and the instant connection she felt.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>&#8220;It was almost like the whole stage filled with light, even though it&#8217;s just school auditorium lights. <!-- -->But it was almost like we were lit. And the moment I looked in his eyes, it was like everything came alive.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>She echoed those feelings during an appearance on the Amy &amp; T.J. Podcast in 2024, saying she always believed they were destined to be together.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/>&#8220;I knew that something was going to happen between us that was significant and I had every confidence in every bone that that was going to happen.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>From teenage sweethearts to lifelong partners<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Patrick was 19 and Lisa was 15 when they first met. After dating for several years, they got married on June 12, 1975, in a backyard ceremony before celebrating with family and friends at his family&#8217;s dance studio.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>In a 2007 interview with People, Patrick shared what first drew him to Lisa.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>&#8220;I knew she was the smartest chick I&#8217;d ever met in my life.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>He also admitted that &#8220;for a long time I didn&#8217;t feel like I deserved her.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>The Dirty Dancing star also spoke about the secret to their enduring marriage.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>&#8220;A relationship survives because of keeping the friendship alive and learning how to fall in love over and over again and never taking the other person for granted and seeing things in a new light with new eyes.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>He added that disagreements were healthy as long as they focused on achieving a shared goal rather than protecting one&#8217;s ego.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Lisa was Patrick&#8217;s partner on and off the screen<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lisa wasn&#8217;t just Patrick&#8217;s wife\u2014she was also one of his biggest creative collaborators. While preparing for Dirty Dancing, Patrick revealed that some of his most important rehearsals happened privately with her.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>&#8220;My most important rehearsals were with Lisa in a hotel room. We&#8217;d practice over and over and over.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>He also credited Lisa with helping him shape many of the characters he portrayed throughout his career.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/>The couple later starred together in One Last Dance, adapted from an award-winning play they co-wrote. Away from Hollywood, they shared several passions, including raising horses, running a music business and managing a wildlife preserve.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Their final chapter together<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Patrick and Lisa had hoped to start a family, but after Lisa suffered a miscarriage in 1990, they eventually decided not to pursue parenthood. <!-- -->They later wrote about the experience in their memoir The Time of My Life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/>After Patrick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the couple decided to renew their wedding vows.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/>Recalling the ceremony in an interview with Oprah. com, Lisa said, &#8220;It was incredibly magical. It was a fairy-tale day.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>She also remembered Patrick arriving on a white horse.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"56\"\/>Following his passing in 2009 at the age of 57, Lisa has continued to speak about the bond they shared. <!-- -->In an interview with TODAY, she revealed that she still feels his presence in her everyday life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/>&#8220;His voice is in my head.
