The nebula represents the remnants of a Sun-like star that cast off its external shell in its death throes. While researchers have long theorised that expelled stellar envelopes enrich the surrounding interstellar medium to seed future celestial bodies, documenting this dispersal in real time had eluded previous observational attempts.

How the Telescope uncovered the faint bow shocks

Despite running at a fraction of its final hardware capacity, the observatory detected 22 dimly illuminated arcs extending into the outer halo well beyond the Helix Nebula’s primary bright ring. Researchers interpret glowing arcs as bow shocks, which resemble the wake pushed in front of a moving vessel. These are formed as dense pockets of ejected matter crash through the surrounding interstellar medium.Bow shocks situated further from the core appear distinctly smaller, softer and more fragmented, illustrating how the traveling clouds break down and dissolve into surrounding space over an estimated span of roughly 10,000 years.Commenting on the images, University of British Columbia astronomer Sun Kwok, who was not part of the research team, highlighted that the findings deliver critical new insights into how stellar mass loss interacts with interstellar space.

Low-cost engineering behind MOTHRA

The breakthrough imagery was recorded by the Modular Optical Telephoto Hyperspectral Robotic Array (MOTHRA), situated at Chile’s El Sauce Observatory. Constructed for a few tens of millions of dollars with financial backing from XTX Markets founder and CEO Alex Gerko, MOTHRA is scheduled for full operational completion by the end of this year.Modeled after its predecessor, the Dragonfly array in New Mexico, MOTHRA’s primary objective is tracing the faint filaments of the cosmic web that connect distant galaxies, where vast reserves of matter produce extremely faint light signals.

Source link

The Helix nebula, imaged here, lies 650 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius.
