The former MLB star, who faced his own struggles with drug abuse during his baseball career, believes Kyrgios needs support rather than harsh judgment.Strawberry, now a pastor who helps people through recovery, said athletes dealing with substance abuse should not be defined by one mistake. He also understands the pressure that comes with public criticism. Strawberry hopes Kyrgios gets the time, care and support needed to recover, while warning that punishment alone may not solve the problem.<\/p>\n Darryl Strawberry recently spoke with TMZ Sports about Kyrgios\u2019 positive cocaine test and made his stance clear. He believes it is unfair to immediately punish athletes who are dealing with substance abuse problems.\u201cI think it\u2019s truly unfair when people punish people, especially athletes, that have substance abuse problems. I had it for a very long time and I received the same kind of treatment from the public. A lot of times we don\u2019t understand what a person is going through emotionally, mentally, inside\u201d, Strawberry said.Strawberry knows the situation better than most. He enjoyed an outstanding career in Major League Baseball and was considered one of the most talented players of his generation. However, his career was also affected by drug abuse.The former slugger was suspended by MLB three times. His struggles became a major part of his public story. Many baseball fans have also wondered how much more he could have achieved without those problems.Years later, Strawberry has turned his life around. He has been in recovery for a long time and now works as a minister. He also helps others dealing with addiction and recovery.\u201cSubstance abuse is just something to escape from. You can be great as an athlete and have all the talent you want, but at the same time, when you\u2019re broken on the inside, you need to be healed on the inside. And that\u2019s all it is really for him\u201d, he added.Strawberry believes people should avoid judging Kyrgios without knowing what he may be experiencing away from the tennis court.<\/p>\n Nick Kyrgios could face a lengthy suspension after the positive test. Reports have suggested that the punishment could potentially reach four years.For Strawberry, however, the focus should not only be on punishment. He believes Kyrgios needs people around him who will support him through the difficult period.\u201cHe just needs time. He just needs people to love him through the process. And that\u2019s what it was for me, having people love me through the process and help me through the process.We all need help. You know, we all fall short\u201d, Strawberry said.Strawberry hopes tennis authorities will consider a supportive approach when deciding Kyrgios\u2019 punishment.
