<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nPUNE: Satyaki Ashok Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, is the complainant in the criminal defamation case against Congress leader and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over remarks Gandhi allegedly made about Savarkar during a speech in London in March 2023.The proceedings in Pune have brought renewed attention to Satyaki’s family background, his own association with Savarkar-related activities and his maternal links to the family of Nathuram Godse. During his ongoing cross-examination, Satyaki also told the court that Gopal Godse and Nathuram Godse were active members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).The latest development in the case is a plea by Satyaki’s lawyer seeking Gandhi’s voice sample for forensic comparison with an electronic recording on record. Gandhi’s counsel Milind Pawarhas opposed the plea, arguing that the case has not yet reached the stage at which the defence would address whether the alleged speech was made with defamatory intent. The Pune special MP\/MLA court has directed the defence to file its formal response by September 1.Who is <\/span>Satyaki Savarkar<\/span>?<\/span>Satyaki is the son of Ashok Savarkar and Himani Savarkar and the grandnephew of V D Savarkar.His father Ashok was the son of Narayan Damodar Savarkar, V D Savarkar’s brother. Satyaki therefore belongs to the Savarkar family through his paternal lineage. He has described Narayan Savarkar as a freedom fighter and supporter of V D Savarkar’s views.Satyaki, who has worked in the IT sector, has also been publicly associated with Savarkar-related activities. In his 2026 cross-examination, he acknowledged that he runs the Har Ghar Savarkar campaign and that the campaign has a committee. He said the committee sells Savarkar’s books and other merchandise, including lanterns and T-shirts.He also acknowledged that he had been a keynote speaker or chief guest at several Savarkar-related programmes while the case was pending.He denied that the defamation case was filed to strengthen his political position or to target Gandhi politically or ideologically. He also denied that the case was motivated by ideological differences.<\/p>\n Satyaki has two prominent family lineages:1. The Savarkar side<\/span>His father Ashok was the son of Narayan Damodar Savarkar, who was the brother of V D Savarkar. This makes Satyaki the grandnephew of V D Savarkar. 2. The Godse side<\/span>Satyaki’s mother Himani Savarkar was the daughter of Gopal Godse, the younger brother of Nathuram Godse.That makes Gopal Godse Satyaki’s maternal grandfather and Nathuram Godse his maternal granduncle.The maternal lineage became a subject of litigation in 2025 after Gandhi’s defence sought details of Satyaki’s maternal family tree. The Pune court rejected the application, observing that the case concerned the alleged defamatory speech against V D Savarkar and was not a dispute about the family tree of Satyaki’s mother.The Godse connection nevertheless resurfaced during Satyaki’s cross-examination in 2026.What did Satyaki say about Nathuram and Gopal Godse?<\/span>During cross-examination by Gandhi’s lawyer Milind D Pawar, Satyaki agreed that Gopal Godse and Nathuram Godse were active members of the RSS. The statement emerged while the defence was questioning him about his family background and the historical links between the Savarkar and Godse families.Satyaki also acknowledged the political background of his family, saying in court that there was a political background \u201cfrom Mr. Savarkar to my mother\u201d. He said his mother had contested the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections twice on the Hindu Mahasabha ticket.The Marathi deposition records that Himani Savarkar contested the Kasba Assembly constituency in 2004 and Kothrud in 2009.Satyaki’s own political and organisational activities have also featured in the cross-examination. He said he runs the Har Ghar Savarkar campaign and has appeared as a speaker or chief guest at several Savarkar-related events, including programmes attended by public figures.What is the Rahul Gandhi-Satyaki Savarkar defamation case?<\/span>The case relates to a speech Gandhi allegedly made at an Overseas Congress event in London on March 5, 2023.According to Satyaki’s complaint, Gandhi claimed that V D Savarkar had written in a book about an incident in which Savarkar and five or six of his friends allegedly beat up a Muslim man and felt happy about it.Satyaki has alleged that Savarkar did not write any such book and that no such incident occurred. He accused Gandhi of making false and malicious statements intended to damage Savarkar’s reputation.Satyaki filed the criminal defamation complaint in Pune in April 2023. The proceedings were subsequently transferred to the special MP\/MLA court.The case is being tried under the criminal defamation provisions invoked in the complaint. Gandhi has pleaded not guilty. The court has since recorded Satyaki’s chief examination and Gandhi’s counsel has been conducting his cross-examination.What has emerged during Satyaki’s cross-examination?<\/span>The cross-examination has ranged beyond the alleged London speech to Savarkar’s writings, his political and historical legacy, Satyaki’s family background and the electronic evidence relied upon in the complaint.Satyaki has acknowledged that he was not an eyewitness to historical events involving Savarkar and said his understanding was based on his reading of Savarkar’s writings and literature. He also told the court that he had submitted material relating to Savarkar’s writings.The cross-examination has also dealt extensively with Savarkar’s clemency petitions. Satyaki acknowledged that the petitions were available in government records but said he had not filed them in the present case because, according to him, the case concerned Gandhi’s alleged defamatory statement and not the petitions.He maintained that Savarkar’s release was not the result of the petitions. At the same time, he acknowledged that there was no document on record showing that Savarkar was released on the basis of a 1923 resolution passed by the Indian National Congress at Kakinada.Satyaki relied on the Kakinada resolution, which condemned Savarkar’s continued incarceration and called for his release, but the deposition records his admission that there was no document before the court establishing that the resolution resulted in Savarkar’s release.Questions over the electronic evidence<\/span>One of the significant aspects of the cross-examination concerns the electronic recording of Gandhi’s alleged London speech.Satyaki acknowledged during cross-examination that he had filed one CD, had not verified it through the court Nazir and had not filed a transcript of the video along with the CD. He also admitted that a statement in his complaint saying that a video and transcript had been filed together was incorrect.He further acknowledged that he had not filed a forensic report of the CD along with the complaint, had not filed documentary evidence showing which computer had prepared the CD and had no documentary evidence independently establishing that the CD contained the alleged defamatory speech.When asked about the contents of the CD, Satyaki said the original speech had been broadcast on Rahul Gandhi’s YouTube channel and that he had copied the entire speech into the CD.Why has Satyaki sought Rahul Gandhi’s voice sample?<\/span>Against this backdrop, Satyaki’s lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar has sought a voice sample of Gandhi.In the application, Satyaki’s side says the voice sample is necessary to establish the identity and authenticity of certain electronic recordings. It seeks a direction for Gandhi to provide a voice sample before the competent authority or Forensic Science Laboratory and asks that the sample be scientifically compared with the recording already on record.The application invokes Section 349 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and says a voice sample would provide corroborative evidence through scientific comparison.The defence has opposed the plea. Gandhi’s lawyer Milind D Pawar argued that the proceedings had not yet reached the stage at which the defence would address whether the alleged speech was actually delivered with defamatory intent, and therefore contended that a voice sample was not required at this stage.
