On October 3, 2018, she set out from Victoria, Canada, aboard her 38-foot yacht Nereida. After spending 320 days at sea, she returned to Victoria on September 7, 2019, at the age of 77, completing the journey alone, without outside assistance and without stopping. Guinness World Records officially recognises Socrates as the oldest female to sail around the world solo and non-stop, at 77 years and 21 days.

A setback at 75

Socrates had already spent years pursuing long-distance sailing challenges when the 2017 accident happened. She was preparing Nereida for another attempt to become the oldest person to sail around the world when she fell from a ladder on the yacht. The accident was severe. She suffered a broken neck and ribs, among other injuries, and her planned 2017 voyage had to be postponed. At the time, she had already experienced several failed attempts at completing a solo, non-stop circumnavigation, making the accident another major obstacle in an already demanding journey. For many people, such an injury might have ended the plan altogether. Socrates, however, used the following months to recover and prepare for another attempt.

Back on the water

According to Wikipedia, on October 3, 2018, Socrates finally began the voyage she had been forced to postpone. She departed from Victoria, British Columbia, aboard Nereida, a 38-foot Najad 380 yacht. The challenge was not simply to travel around the world. Her goal was to complete the circumnavigation single-handedly, without outside assistance and without stopping. That meant she would have to manage the yacht, navigation, repairs, weather and everyday life at sea largely by herself. The journey took her across some of the most challenging waters on the planet. She sailed through the Southern Ocean and around the Five Great Capes, including Cape Horn, while dealing with difficult weather and mechanical problems along the way.

Problems kept coming

The voyage was far from smooth. During the journey, Nereida suffered significant damage to its mainsail in the Cape Horn region. Later, the yacht experienced a knockdown, a situation in which a sailing vessel is pushed heavily onto its side by severe conditions, south-west of New Zealand. Socrates had to enter Timaru Bay in New Zealand to make repairs. She also later lost her headsail in the North Pacific. These setbacks meant that completing the journey required more than endurance. Socrates had to repeatedly assess damage, make repairs and continue navigating while dealing with the unpredictable conditions of the open ocean. Her journey was therefore not simply a test of age. It was a test of seamanship, decision-making and persistence.

320 days alone

According to BBC, after 320 days at sea, Socrates finally approached Victoria in September 2019. She arrived on September 7, 2019, completing her circumnavigation at the age of 77 years and 21 days. Guinness World Records lists her as the oldest female to sail around the world solo and non-stop.Her arrival marked the successful completion of a journey that had taken years of preparation and several attempts. She had not only returned to sailing after a serious accident but had completed one of the most demanding forms of ocean sailing at an age when many people would have considered such an undertaking impossible.

A record-setting achievement

Socrates’ 2019 achievement was particularly significant because it was not her first major sailing record. In 2013, she had already been recognised by Guinness for sailing around the world solo and non-stop as the oldest woman at that time. Her later voyage from Victoria represented another attempt to push the limits of what she could accomplish. When she completed the 2018–2019 voyage, she became the oldest person at that time to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation, doing so at 77.The overall record later changed. In 2020, Australian sailor Bill Hatfield completed a solo, non-stop circumnavigation at 81. However, because his route did not pass south of New Zealand or Tasmania, Socrates retained the distinction of being the oldest person to sail around the world single-handedly, unassisted and non-stop via the Five Great Capes.

More than an age record

What makes Socrates’ story remarkable is not simply the number attached to her record. It is the sequence of events that preceded it. At 75, she suffered serious injuries after falling from a ladder. Her planned voyage was postponed. A year later, she went back to the challenge, spending almost a year at sea alone and dealing with storms, damaged sails, equipment problems and repairs. Her journey demonstrated that age did not necessarily prevent her from undertaking an extraordinary physical and mental challenge. Instead, she treated the 2017 accident as a setback rather than the end of her ambition. When she finally sailed back into Victoria at 77, she had completed the voyage she had once been forced to postpone, and had entered the record books in the process.Socrates’ story is ultimately one of resilience, patience and determination. The record may be measured in years and days, but the achievement was built through years of preparation, repeated attempts and the willingness to begin again after failure.

Source link

Jeanne Socrates (Image Credit: Wikipedia) In 2017, British sailor Jeanne Socrates was 75 when a fall from a ladder while working on her yacht left her with serious injuries and forced her to postpone another attempt to sail around the world.
