He entered the NBA as the No. 1 pick in 2003 and quickly became the face of the Cleveland Cavaliers.<!-- --> Since then, he has won four championships, four MVP awards and become the NBA\u2019s all-time leading scorer. Through the biggest wins and the hardest stretches of his career, Savannah James has remained close to him while raising their three children and building her own career.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Savannah has seen LeBron\u2019s career from a much more personal distance than most people ever could. She was with him when he was a young player in Cleveland, when his move to Miami brought intense criticism and when he returned home with a promise to win a championship. <!-- -->After the Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA title, Savannah explained what the achievement meant to her family. \u201cI couldn\u2019t be more proud of LeBron. He came back and did exactly what he ultimately, deep down inside, wanted to accomplish for his city.<!-- --> Being back home is a part of what makes us so happy,\u201d she told Essence.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>How Savannah James helped LeBron James keep his life balanced away from basketball<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Savannah James and LeBron James met as teenagers in Akron, Ohio, before the NBA became part of their everyday lives. Their relationship grew while LeBron developed into one of the most highly regarded young basketball players in the country. By the time the Cavaliers selected him first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, Savannah had already become an important part of his life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>The attention around LeBron changed almost immediately. He went from being a teenage basketball sensation to an NBA player whose performances, decisions and personal life received national coverage. <!-- -->Savannah experienced that transition with him while also starting a family.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/>Their first son, Bronny, was born in October 2004. They later welcomed Bryce in 2007 and Zhuri in 2014. Savannah&#8217;s responsibilities therefore grew alongside LeBron&#8217;s career. While he spent long stretches traveling, practicing and preparing for games, she helped maintain the family routine away from the court.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>She explained her role during an Essence interview in 2020. <!-- -->\u201cI\u2019m his support system with whatever he needs,\u201d Savannah said. \u201cIf he needs someone to listen to him. If he needs to talk or if he says, \u2018Hey babe, I\u2019m tired. Can I take a nap?\u2019 I will say, \u2018Yeah, baby. Take a nap,\u2019 and keep the kids occupied. It\u2019s a part of the role that I play as the mother of his kids and being his wife.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Savannah also explained why she believed the atmosphere at home was important for LeBron.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>\u201cThe balance that I create in our house is for his success. He is very busy, and I understand that, and the kids are at the age now that they get it. <!-- -->Being there for him is a huge part of his success,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>Her remark offered a look at the part of LeBron&#8217;s career that fans rarely see. His job involves constant travel, training and preparation, but his life at home continues at the same time. Savannah described herself as someone who helps keep those two worlds from becoming overwhelming.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>That responsibility became even more important as LeBron&#8217;s career brought the family through several major moves.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>How Savannah James stayed beside LeBron through the Miami backlash and Cleveland\u2019s championship<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>LeBron&#8217;s 2010 decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat became one of the most controversial moments of his career. The announcement sparked an angry response from many Cavaliers fans, particularly in his hometown.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>Savannah was part of the family dealing with that reaction. The move eventually produced two championships in Miami, but LeBron&#8217;s first season there ended with a disappointing NBA Finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks. <!-- -->The criticism that followed added another difficult chapter to his career.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>LeBron and Savannah moved forward together, and in 2014, he decided to return to Cleveland. She had watched him return with a promise to Cleveland. She then watched him deliver the championship that had been missing from the city for generations.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>That journey explains why the 2016 title was different from the other championships LeBron had won.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"63\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>How Savannah James built her own career while supporting LeBron James and their children<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Savannah&#8217;s life has also developed alongside LeBron&#8217;s career. She has pursued business and philanthropic work while raising their children. I\u2019m not going for money. I\u2019m not going for family. <!-- -->What am I really playing for at this point?\u201d he wrote. \u201cI still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"98\"\/>He also said he wanted to help Philadelphia compete for another championship. She was there when he returned home and faced the pressure of delivering a championship. And LeBron is 41 and entering his 24th season. Savannah&#8217;s place in his life, however, has remained same. She has been there since before the championships and before the records. She has watched the criticism, the celebrations, the career changes and the family milestones from close range.
