The pedestrians who cussed \u2018Eww\u2019 were not wrong. That was gross and disgusting, but according to the studio, the rolling installation highlighted the staggering scale of premature hair ageing and everyday shedding.\u201cWe didn\u2019t create a giant Tumblehair just to make you uncomfortable. We wanted to make you stop and think about how much hair you leave behind every day\u2014in your brush, your shower, your drain, and everywhere in between,\u201d the haircare brand said.The art installation rolled across NYC neighbourhoods, including Midtown, West Village, Chinatown and the Seaport. Uncommon creative directors Lauren Cooper and Cara Johnson wanted to break the quiet whisper around hair loss. They weren\u2019t ready to approach it \u2018quietly and apologetically\u2019 in marketing.\u201cWe wanted to flip the script and encourage a conversation about a topic people tend to shy away from, despite many of us experiencing this at some point in our lives. Tumblehair takes something that 80 million Americans are dealing with and makes it impossible to ignore. It\u2019s an absurd visual, but that\u2019s exactly the point,\u201d they said in a statement.The cultural conversation around hair loss is already changing. Hair transplants have become more normalised and more openly discussed. People using hair extensions and wigs do not shy away from talking about it. Even celebrities and athletes speak about it without the old shame. However, marketing firms haven\u2019t caught up to reality yet. The internet split into factions. While some internet users were curious, others were visibly nauseated. \u201cAbsolutely no idea what the intention of this hairball is,\u201d one Instagram user wrote.Some users recoiled in horror: \u201cThis is so unhygienic.\u201d Some confessed that it made them queasy. Others called it unhygienic and questioned why anyone would want this as an advertisement. \u201cDisgusting, I don\u2019t want to see that as an ad.\u201d A fourth agreed: \u201cThis makes me want to throw up.\u201dBut some users were genuinely curious. \u201cAm I the only one who thinks it\u2019s cute by the way it moves?\u201d one asked. Some viewers wanted to understand the mechanics. Was it a robot? Was someone inside? \u201cBut wait. Is it a robot?! Is someone inside of it?\u201d The most telling reactions came from people who saw themselves in it. \u201cSo that\u2019s where all my postpartum hair loss went,\u201d one user quipped.People who found Tumblehair repulsive were still talking about it, still thinking about hair loss, still reacting to something that the industry has spent decades presenting as quietly manageable.Either way, the deliberate, unapologetic campaign, designed to create awareness about hair loss, was impossible to ignore.
