But in India, the answer to this question determines your social status.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Is there any scope?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>How much will you earn?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>What will people say?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>Some careers in India instantly earn respect. <!-- -->Others invite questions.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>So when a young person chooses a career, are they really choosing what they want or are they going for what society considers worth choosing?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What are the top careers in India?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>A 2018 Global Education Census by Cambridge International, based on responses from nearly 20,000 teachers and students across the world, including 4,400 teachers and 3,800 students in India, found that medicine and engineering continued to dominate career ambitions.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>The survey found that 23% of Indian students wanted to become doctors or dentists, while an equal 23% aspired to become engineers. Another 16% wanted to become software engineers, the highest proportion for this career among all countries surveyed. The findings also showed India&#8217;s strong interest in scientific careers, with 8% of students saying they wanted to become scientists.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>Now, let\u2019s figure out why that is so.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What role do parents &amp; society play?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>While some students choose these careers out of genuine interest, others pursue them under pressure from parents and society.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>Another 2020 study published in the Int J of Indian Culture and Business Management found that parents, peers and societal expectations significantly influence career choices among Indian youth.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>TOI also conducted a survey to understand how society perceives different professions and whether certain careers continue to command greater respect than others.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"75 % of respondents selected yes when asked if their relatives ever suggested them a \u2018better\u2019 career\" msid=\"133263067\" width=\"\" title=\"75 % of respondents selected yes when asked if their relatives ever suggested them a \u2018better\u2019 career\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133263067\/75-of-respondents-selected-yes-when-asked-if-their-relatives-ever-suggested-them-a-better-career.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>75 % of respondents selected yes when asked if their relatives ever suggested them a \u2018better\u2019 career<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among respondents from sectors including journalism, medicine and PR, we received 100% response in \u2018yes\u2019, agreeing that society accords greater respect to certain professions, with over 80 % respondents selecting both doctors, and IAS\/IPS officers emerging as the most prestigious career choices, in second position was engineering.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>Around 74 % of them agreed that often-overlooked professions like nurse, police constable, mechanic, cab driver do not receive the same respect as traditionally prestigious careers in medicine and engineering.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>Somdeb Dhar Choudhury, one of the respondents and a PR consultant, said, \u201cI grew up in an environment where engineering was considered the more conventional professional route. Many people in my extended family came from engineering backgrounds, and after Class 12, there was an expectation that I would follow a similar path.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"46\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Radhika Goyal spoke to TOI\" msid=\"133263124\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133263124\/radhika-goyal-spoke-to-toi.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked why he thinks PR receives less social recognition, he said, \u201cIn India, professions such as medicine, engineering and civil services have had a clearly understood social identity for generations. <!-- -->Families know what those careers involve, there is a visible educational path leading to them, and society has established benchmarks of success around them. PR operates very differently. Much of the work happens behind the scenes.<!-- -->\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Is it affecting mental health?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>When asked if the respondents ever felt pressured to choose a career mainly because of its title or status, half of them responded with yes. More than half chose yes when asked if their relatives ever suggested they choose a particular career.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"57\"\/>Rashmi N, former Army public school counselor, while speaking to TOI, says, \u201cPeer comparisons lead to self doubt and career indecisions. Falling behind in academics and comparing grades with peers may also trigger withdrawal from friends, low self esteem and or lack of interest to improve.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"59\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"What does Psychologist says\" msid=\"133263121\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133263121\/what-does-psychologist-says.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On the other hand psychologists say the pressure to choose a socially accepted career may not always be obvious.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"62\"\/>Explaining the same, a Delhi-based psychologist Radhika Goyal said, \u201cwhen motivation is driven mainly by fear, fear of failure, criticism, comparison or disappointing the family, rather than genuine enthusiasm. <!-- -->A student may perform well but still experience burnout, frustration or disengagement.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"66\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"impact of society of your mental health\" msid=\"133263104\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133263104\/impact-of-society-of-your-mental-health.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Factors influencing parents\u2019 decisions <\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"69\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"71\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\"\/>While parents may want the best for their children, it\u2019s important to discuss what drives them to push certain careers over others.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"74\"\/>1. Unfinished ambitions leading to societal comparisons<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"92\"\/>Goyal pointed to an often-overlooked factor: parents projecting their own unfinished ambitions or past experiences onto their children.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"94\"\/>\u201cParents may sometimes project their own unfinished ambitions, disappointments or experiences onto their children\u2019s career choices, often with good intentions. A parent who could not pursue a particular career may believe they are protecting their child from the difficulties they experienced.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"97\"\/>However, this dynamic appears to be changing among a newer generation of parents.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"99\"\/>Savita S, a parent of a 24-year-old daughter working in an HR firm, said, \u201cI believe my children are satisfied with my support.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"101\"\/>When asked about the typical \u2018Sharma ji ka beta\u2019 comparison, she said that parents are becoming more mindful of how their children respond to such pressure.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"103\"\/>\u201cThis kind of comparison is reducing day by day.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"105\"\/>Now, if you\u2019ve had your parents\u2019 support, overcome societal pressure and chosen a career based on your own dreams, are you truly happy with that choice?<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"107\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What happens when youth passion meets reality?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"109\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"111\"\/>1. Paycheck<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"113\"\/>For some young professionals, the pressure around career choices continues even after entering the workforce, with questions of money, job security and growth becoming important factors in deciding whether to stay or change paths.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"116\"\/>Aayushi, a journalist, while sharing her experience said, \u201cI was satisfied with choosing a career outside the conventional mainstream, but was disappointed by the financial returns. I am satisfied in terms of doing something different from the generic league. Women face another layer of pressure<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"125\"\/>A 2025 study published in the <span class=\"em\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">International Journal of Trends and Innovations in Business &amp; Social Sciences<\/span> found that women were more likely to change careers because of social expectations, especially after marriage, while men more often cited personal interests and changes in the job market.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"130\"\/>The gendered perception of careers can also influence how professions are valued.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"132\"\/>3. When your profession needs an explanation<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"134\"\/>For some professionals, however, the pressure is less about being forced to leave a career and more about constantly having to explain its worth.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"136\"\/>Somdeb recalled that this became apparent after he entered the industry. \u201cIf someone says they are a doctor, engineer or lawyer, people immediately understand the profession. In PR, you often have to explain what the job involves before people can understand its value.
