The Welsh rider was competing for the NSN Development Team when he was involved in a collision with a vehicle during Stage 8.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>The 166.8-kilometre stage ran from Melga\u00e7o to Fafe. Tarling was a time trial specialist who joined the NSN Development Team in 2025 and had represented Great Britain in road and track cycling.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Finlay Tarling death: What happened during stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened midway through Stage 8, bringing the race to a halt. Tarling was involved in a collision with a vehicle, although the exact circumstances have not been officially confirmed.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>Per Sky News, Tarling was hit by a non-race car that entered the road. <!-- -->Portuguese broadcaster RTP also reported that he was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>Cyclingnews reported that a driver unaffiliated with the race had reportedly entered the route, but stressed that the details were yet to be officially confirmed. The Volta a Portugal organisers and Portuguese Cycling Federation later neutralised the stage until Fafe. The scheduled podium ceremony was also cancelled as a mark of respect.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/>\u201cThe organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones,\u201d organisers said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>Tarling&#8217;s team also confirmed his death.\u201cWe are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,\u201d NSN Development Team said. <!-- -->\u201cFin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Finlay Tarling career highlights: A promising young rider<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Despite being just 19, Tarling had already collected several notable results. He won silver in the team pursuit at the 2023 Junior European Track Championships and finished runner-up at the 2023 Junior Chrono des Nations.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/>In 2024, he won team pursuit gold at the British Cycling National Track Championships and claimed three bronze medals at the UCI Junior Track World Championships. <!-- -->He also finished second in the British junior time trial championships.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/>Tarling continued progressing at senior level, finishing second on Stage 6 of the 2026 Tour du Rwanda. His older brother, Josh Tarling, is also a professional cyclist.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>British Cycling performance director Stephen Park highlighted his potential. \u201cFin was a talented rider with a fantastic future ahead of him, a loyal teammate and an all-round brilliant young man,\u201d Park said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Tributes pour in for Finlay Tarling after tragic death<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Tributes quickly followed from across the cycling world. UCI president David Lappartient said Tarling was a young rider with \u201chis whole future ahead of him\u201d and called his death a profound tragedy for his family, teammates and the cycling community.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>Portuguese President Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 Seguro expressed his \u201cdeep sorrow\u201d and said Tarling&#8217;s death had left the peloton, the race and Portugal in mourning. Prime Minister Lu\u00eds Montenegro also offered condolences to his family, team and fellow riders.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>Several teams and riders shared condolences online. For NSN, Tarling was more than a cyclist. He was remembered as a son, brother, teammate and friend.
