The Indiana Fever guard picked up multiple WNBA fines before a knee injury ended her season early. But a joke she made during that stretch took an unexpected turn.<!-- --> What started as a GoFundMe for fines or even a yacht raised $10,182. Cunningham then chose to give the money to a cause that had already touched her life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Sophie Cunningham turned her WNBA fines joke into a $10,182 act of kindness<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 2, 2025, Sophie Cunningham launched a GoFundMe with a $26,000 goal. The Indiana Fever guard kept things playful when she explained the reason behind it.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>\u201cThis is more of a joke than anything. For fines only or to charity or for a yacht idk\u2026,\u201d Cunningham wrote on the GoFundMe page.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>The joke quickly caught on with her supporters. Over the next five days, 171 people donated to the fundraiser. Contributions ranged from $5 to $2,699, and the total eventually reached $10,182.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>That was when Cunningham decided the money would take a different path. \u201cA yacht would be nice, but whatever we raise here will be going directly to Ronald McDonald House Charities. I\u2019ll take care of my own fines. Y\u2019all are the best,\u201d Cunningham wrote in an update on the GoFundMe page, according to the Indianapolis Star&#8217;s Oct. 10, 2025 report.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>The decision came after a season in which Cunningham had become increasingly vocal about her frustrations with the WNBA. She had received multiple fines after speaking publicly about league officiating.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>In an August episode of her podcast, Show Me Something, Sophie Cunningham explained her disciplinary record with a joke of her own.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>\u201cI\u2019m officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA,\u201d she said during the episode.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>She also explained why she continued to speak out, saying, \u201cI promise you, everyone in our league feels that way and I\u2019m just kind of the only one who says something.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>So the fundraiser made sense at the moment. Sophie Cunningham had joked about the fines, fans responded and the money started coming in. Yet when she had more than $10,000 sitting in the fundraiser, she did not use it to erase the fines that had inspired the idea.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/>Instead, she picked Ronald McDonald House Charities. That choice also came during a difficult personal stretch. Cunningham&#8217;s 2025 season ended on Aug. 17 after she tore the MCL in her right knee. She later spent time on the sideline alongside several injured Fever teammates, including Caitlin Clark and Sydney Colson.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>During the Fever&#8217;s exit interviews, Cunningham made it clear that she planned to return strong. <!-- -->When reporters asked whether she expected to be healthy for the 2026 season, she answered, \u201cHell yeah, man,\u201d before saying she hoped to ramp up basketball activities in January.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>The fundraiser gave Cunningham a chance to do something positive while she waited for her own return.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Sophie Cunninghum  past Ronald McDonald House connection goes back to 2015<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The charity was not just any random act. Sophie Cunningham first encountered Ronald McDonald House Charities as a teenager.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>Ronald McDonald House Charities helps families stay close to their children while they receive medical treatment. <!-- -->Its programmes provide places to stay, meals and other support for families facing difficult medical situations. Cunningham\u2019s donation therefore went toward a cause that helps families during some of the hardest moments of their lives.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>On 2015, the Columbia Missourian reported on Cunningham&#8217;s visit to a Ronald McDonald House in Chicago while she prepared for the McDonald&#8217;s All-American Game. She met Brian and Jennifer Godish and their four-year-old son, Bradley, who had leukemia. <!-- -->Cunningham played with Bradley, built wooden train tracks with him and joined other children for basketball. She also volunteered to visit children who could not leave the hospital.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/>\u201cIt makes me smile because this is how my parents raised me, and I\u2019m just a little bit of who they are. I just want to share that with all these little kids and their parents,\u201d Cunningham told the Columbia Missourian during that 2015 visit.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/>Ten years later, she was once again giving to the same organisation.
