NEW DELHI: India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme has taken another step forward, with Reliance Industries<\/a> and British aerospace major Rolls-Royce, according to news agency PTI, announcing a partnership to develop the fighter’s engine. The development adds a new dimension to India’s effort to build a home-grown fifth-generation stealth fighter.The development is significant because the engine has long been one of the most challenging parts of India’s fighter aircraft programmes. India has historically depended heavily on foreign engines, making the development of a high-thrust indigenous powerplant a key part of its push for greater defence self-reliance.In a joint statement, the two companies said they would explore setting up an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. The proposed facility would aim to develop expertise across the entire engine lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and long-term maintenance and support.The partnership would bring together Rolls-Royce’s experience in aero-engine technology with Reliance’s capabilities in technology, manufacturing and project execution. The objective is to develop the engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme within the country.The move also aligns with the government’s broader push for Atmanirbhar Bharat, with India seeking greater control over critical defence technologies and reduced dependence on foreign suppliers.“India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies,” Anant Ambani, executive director of Reliance Industries, said in the statement.He said the partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s propulsion expertise with Reliance’s “technology, manufacturing, scale and execution capabilities” to create an aerospace engine ecosystem that could become “self-reliant and, over time, globally competitive”.Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic, as per PTI, said the partnership would bring together “our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise” with Reliance’s position in India’s industrial sector. He described it as “a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country”.The companies said the proposed complex could eventually support collaboration beyond the AMCA engine, including projects in defence, civil aerospace and newer power and propulsion technologies.The AMCA is India’s planned indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter. Developing a domestic engine for the aircraft has been a long-standing objective, as India currently depends on foreign suppliers for fighter aircraft engines.However, the announcement does not mean that a joint venture or final engine contract has already been signed. The companies have described it as a strategic intent to explore the proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex.Neither Reliance nor Rolls-Royce has disclosed the proposed investment, ownership structure or timeline for setting up the complex.If realised, the facility could give India an end-to-end domestic capability for combat engine development, from designing and manufacturing engines to testing, production and supporting them throughout their operational life.<\/div>\n
