However, the biggest challenge emerged was a self-proclaimed intergalactic space warrior dressed as a trash can, in a contest that was boycotted by all major Westminster parties.Farage, leader of Reform UK, secured 22,239 votes, or 63.3 per cent, to retain his Clacton seat. His closest challenger was Count Binface, the satirical persona of comedian Jonathan Harvey, who received 9,455 votes, or 26.9 per cent.<\/p>\n Farage became Clacton’s MP at the 2024 general election but resigned from Parliament in July amid scrutiny over his financial affairs. The resignation triggered a by-election, which Farage then contested to win back his seat.Farage had said he wanted the people of Clacton to judge him over the allegations, framing the election as a contest between voters and the political establishment.Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Restore Britain all declined to field candidates, calling the election a political stunt or gimmick.The absence of the major parties left Farage facing 33 other candidates, many of them independents or novelty candidates. Only Farage and Count Binface retained their \u00a3500 deposits after the vote.<\/p>\n Count Binface is the satirical character played by British comedian Jonathan Harvey. He campaigned in a distinctive bin-shaped helmet, describing himself as an intergalactic space warrior.His manifesto was built around political satire and deliberately absurd proposals. In Clacton, he promised to nationalise singer Adele, “cut your taxes, and raise everyone else’s” and impose a windfall tax on celebrity crime novels.Despite the jokes, Binface secured 26.9% of the vote, or more than one in four votes cast. It was a strong performance for a novelty candidate.After the result, Binface joked that he had won among the candidates who had “bothered to turn up”, referring to Farage’s absence from the count.<\/p>\n The by-polls were triggered because Farage resigned after facing scrutiny over a \u00a35 million gift from Reform UK donor Christopher Harborne. A parliamentary standards investigation had been examining whether he failed to declare the gift.Farage has denied wrongdoing and argued that resigning and seeking re-election would allow voters to deliver their verdict.The investigation was paused after he resigned but has now resumed following his victory, reported BBC.If the standards commissioner finds that Farage breached parliamentary rules, he could face sanctions, including suspension from the House of Commons. The process could ultimately trigger another by-election in Clacton.Farage did not attend the declaration of the result, saying police had warned him about an alleged campaign to disrupt the event.
