That approach belonged to the past, he argued. The stakes now were more existential. That exchange, reported by The Information, works almost as a thesis statement for how Amodei runs the fastest-growing major company in history. Weeks later, Anthropic’s World Cup commercial opened on a row of tombstones and told viewers to ask hard questions about AI. Now, with an IPO expected as soon as September, the 43-year-old has to take that same posture on the road—to money managers who, according to the report, would very much like him to stop frightening everyone.

The Anthropic IPO is a referendum on whether CEO Dario Amodei doom sells to public investors

The discomfort isn’t new, it’s just newly consequential. One Silicon Valley investor wrote down an unusual risk before putting money into Anthropic: he wasn’t convinced Amodei actually cared about making money. Others have complained privately that his campaign for AI regulation damages both his company and the wider industry. They also concede they have almost no sway over him.Bill Gurley, who hasn’t invested, has called it the most aggressive regulatory capture he’s seen. Amodei’s allies read the criticism differently—Brad Carson, who runs an Anthropic-backed nonprofit, argues the loudest critics are the ones who can’t replicate what he built.

Inside Anthropic, a tiny inner circle and a company that asks Claude first

Few people close to the company could name a meaningful influence on Amodei beyond his sister and president Daniela, his five other co-founders, and his wife Camilla Clark, a former tech operator with almost no public profile who has never held a role at Anthropic. He leads through long essays and Slack posts, skips most day-to-day management, and holds a twice-monthly all-hands that staff call Dario’s Vision Quests—less product review, more state of the world.Employees lean on Claude itself for decisions. Headcount sits above 3,000 and executives don’t plan to raise it much, because they’d rather not hire people they’ll later have to cut as Claude absorbs internal work. One major investor’s summary, per The Information: he is “more of a religious leader than he is a CEO.”

CEO Dario Amodei’s <keyword id="28697858" type="Denny" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-safety" source="keywords">AI safety</keyword> stance has cost Anthropic money

The conviction has a price tag. When bioweapon classifiers began eating into model margins, the finance team objected and Amodei overruled them. His refusal to accept a Pentagon requirement on permitted uses got Anthropic designated a supply chain risk in March. In June, after a dispute over Fable 5’s guardrails, Washington slapped export controls on the model and forced it offline for days.None of it has dented the ascent. Anthropic’s valuation has climbed more than 200-fold in three years to $965 billion, and its revenue run rate—estimated recently at $70 billion—passed OpenAI’s earlier this year. The compromises are real too: money from Qatar and the UAE, over $1 billion a month paid to Elon Musk’s SpaceX for compute. Amodei’s own framing, from his January essay, explains the bind better than his critics do. AI, he wrote, is “such a glittering prize” that restraint becomes nearly impossible.

Source link

Somebody in the room had a perfectly reasonable idea.
