Word from both camps is that it isn’t the usual strip rolled out at Galle and may not turn as sharply as everyone expected before the series opener. It doesn’t look like a dry, raging turner, and generous watering on Thursday suggests there are no attempts to crack it open on the opening day itself.Recent history suggests that for the first couple of days, Galle is a batting paradise, with gradual turn offered as the game progresses. Those who have seen it up close observed that it is a “good wicket,” and India bowling coach Morne Morkel<\/a> emphasised that “something will start to happen” as the match progresses.“It looked like a good surface. And I think as the Test match will go on, something will start to happen. We’ve prepared basically for all that can come our way. And like I said, for us, it’s more about the mental challenge now, facing these conditions, batting time, bowling those spells, and getting the ball in the right area,” said Morkel during a media interaction.<\/p>\n If you bat first, make sure you go big. And if you bowl first, get the ball in the right area. So those disciplines are going to be important.<\/p>\n Morne Morkel “I think it’s a good-looking surface on the eye. I’ll be slightly surprised if it goes the other way. Traditionally, the first two days belong to the batting side. It’s just crucial to get runs on the board. I think that’s going to be important to whatever happens with the toss. If you bat first, make sure you go big. And if you bowl first, get the ball in the right area. So those disciplines are going to be important. And then from there, as the day’s gone, obviously, assess and then come up with the best options for the day,” he added.This leaves India with a crucial riddle to solve. Three spinners or three fast bowlers? Kuldeep Yadav remains a no-brainer for this series, leaving two crucial spots to fill. While Prasidh Krishna is expected to narrowly edge Gurnoor Brar for the second pacer spot, Manav Suthar, who had an impressive one-off Test against Afghanistan, will give India that batting cushion at No. 8 and also add variety to the spin attack.If the spin attack remains as expected, it could be a rare instance where the visitors field all left-arm spinners, but this isn’t currently bothering the Indian camp. Morkel asserted that all three are different from each other and it isn’t a “massive concern” for the group.“Kuldeep is an attacking bowler. Jaddu, with his experience and class, we can’t look past. I think for us, they’re all different in their ways. They’re left-arm spinners, but what they do with the ball is slightly more accurate. I don’t think it’s a massive concern for us. It’s just how Shubman is going to use those guys at certain times. The hosts’ leading spinner, Prabath Jayasuriya, went wicketless in the first innings, bowling 48 overs without success, and could only pick up one wicket in the second innings as well. Even in the two India A fixtures at the same venue last month, runs were on offer and fast bowlers enjoyed bowling. Gurnoor Brar, in particular, stood out with a 10-wicket haul in the second game.The youngster is very close to earning his Test cap as he continues to bowl with a lot of fire in the nets, and the team management is convinced that he is going to serve Indian cricket for a very long time, provided he remains fit. He hasn’t left anything to luck or chance since arriving with the team in the first week of August. He bowled full tilt in Colombo, impressed in the warm-up game at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) Ground and bent his back in the first training session in Galle on Thursday. The wait, however, is expected to be slightly longer for the lanky quick.Even though much noise and chatter is expectedly on spin, Galle presents an opportunity for batters from both teams to capitalise on the first two days. For now, the teams will pray for a favourable toss, as the difference between first and fourth innings totals at this venue has been significant in the last few years.
