The 32-year-old EPFO employee was travelling pillion on a two-wheeler on Ananth Nagar Main Road on Wednesday morning when a car ahead suddenly braked after a pedestrian moved towards the middle of the road.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>The rider braked too, the scooter skidded on the slushy, damaged stretch and Medha was thrown into the path of an approaching mini goods vehicle. She was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind her husband and three-year-old son.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"&lt;sup&gt;\u200b&lt;\/sup&gt;Bengaluru's road repair paradox\" msid=\"133208470\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133208470\/supsupbengalurus-road-repair-paradox.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">A sudden brake \u2014 but was the road already setting the trap?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>Police have identified the sudden braking as the immediate trigger for the crash, and that distinction is important. <!-- -->A road accident rarely has just one cause. A pedestrian on the carriageway, a sudden brake of a vehicle, a two-wheeler losing balance, an oncoming vehicle can all collide within seconds. But it\u2019s the road conditions that determine how much recovery time a commuter has from that moment. And even on a clean, smooth, well-maintained surface, a sudden brake can still be a near miss.<!-- --> The same reaction may be disastrous on a muddy, broken or uneven stretch.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>Medha\u2019s death has thus provoked outrage well beyond the circumstances of the collision. Ananth Nagar residents take out a candlelight march Wednesday evening blaming the Chandapura municipal council for years of neglect and seeking accountability. It was the pothole that caused the accident but it had also been that the road had been in a state of disrepair for years in spite of numerous complaints and repairs. Residents say the stretch had been dug up multiple times after an earlier repair, while portions resurfaced recently developed potholes again within months.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"How a routine ride can turn deadly\" msid=\"133208503\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133208503\/how-a-routine-ride-can-turn-deadly.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">The Bangalore repair paradox<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>But it\u2019s the numbers which make the city\u2019s road problem more than just a question of whether the authorities are fixing roads. Bengaluru has a road network of over 13,000km. The pothole problem in Bengaluru is humongous and despite many repair drives, it continues to be so. Official figures showed that, by March 2026, 41,150 potholes had been identified across the city and that the authorities had repaired 39,887 of them.<!-- --> The repair work cost around Rs 33.85 crore. More worrisome is the recurrence of the problem with residents and public representatives constantly reporting new potholes and road digging for utility works and poor quality resurfacing repeatedly damaging repaired stretches. The numbers show that fixing potholes is not Bengaluru&#8217;s challenge but ensuring that repaired roads do not fall apart.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>That\u2019s structural in part. Bengaluru\u2019s roads are dug up repeatedly to lay water and sewage pipelines, electricity cables, gas lines and optical fiber networks. <!-- -->Every excavation creates another risk of road-surface deterioration if reinstatement is delayed or poorly executed. Traffic police repeatedly serve notices to contractors on pending road works, but contractors have blamed the delay on other civic agencies and pending utility works.<!-- --> This results in the familiar Bengaluru cycle \u2014 a road is repaired, another agency digs it up, restoration is delayed or incomplete, the surface deteriorates and motorists are once again left to navigate broken stretches.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bengaluru's road safety challenge\" msid=\"133208528\" width=\"\" title=\"\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-133208528\/bengalurus-road-safety-challenge.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">The bigger danger isn\u2019t always the pothole<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>So the debate around Medha\u2019s death should not just be about one pothole or one damaged patch that directly caused the crash. Road safety is the total environment to which a driver or rider is expected to react. In a busy city, we often come across a pedestrian crossing all of a sudden, a vehicle applying brakes, a two-wheeler taking a turn or a cyclist coming onto the road. Roads need to provide enough traction, visibility, width and predictability to allow such situations to be dealt with safely.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"39\"\/>The latest accident numbers indicate the magnitude of the larger road safety problem that Bengaluru is facing. The scale of Bengaluru&#8217;s road-safety problem remains stark. In 2025, the city recorded 807 fatal road accidents in which 891 people lost their lives \u2014 more than two road deaths a day. North Bengaluru accounted for 286 of the fatal crashes, followed by South with 194, East with 170 and West with 157. Police have identified speeding, violation of traffic rules and failure to wear helmets among the major factors behind fatal crashes, while infrastructure issues and ongoing road works can further increase the risks faced by motorists.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Who answers the phone when the repairs go bad?<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>Residents of Ananth Nagar say they have been living with the problem for years. &#8220;Roads in Anekal Taluk have been deteriorating for the last four years now and despite residents approaching elected representatives and civic officials, nothing has been done,&#8221; alleged John Athaide of the Anekal Taluk Responsible Citizen Forum. Other residents have complained that potholes have developed in the repaved portion within months.<!-- --> They also pointed out that the route was used daily by school buses, raising the risks for children and other vulnerable road users.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/>The question now is whether the promised meeting between the council, civic officials and road contractors will result in yet another temporary fix or a solution that actually lasts. Bengaluru has seen repeated pothole-filling drives, road improvement programmes and technology-based efforts to identify damaged stretches. <!-- -->Yet the recurrence of potholes suggests that the city\u2019s problem goes deeper than repairs alone.<!-- --> What is needed is better coordination, stronger supervision of roadwork and clear accountability when newly repaired roads deteriorate again.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">No road should be dangerous after a repair<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"56\"\/>That is the uncomfortable question that finally hangs over Medha\u2019s death. Police said the immediate cause could be a sudden brake and loss of equilibrium. <!-- -->But the real civic question is why should there be so little margin for error for the commuter on a road that has been fixed, torn up and fixed again? Filling potholes will not make Bengaluru safer. It has to monitor how long repairs take, who digs up the roads, who fixes them, whether the work is done right and which agency is liable if the surface fails again.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/>Medha&#8217;s journey to work on Wednesday was supposed to be routine. Her death has been a sobering reminder that road safety is about more than how well people drive.
