His German supervisor, August Stauch, recognised the discovery as diamonds, setting off a rush that would transform one of southern Africa\u2019s harshest landscapes.<!-- --> Within months, prospectors and mining companies were moving into the remote desert, while the colonial authorities imposed tight controls over the newly valuable territory. Kolmanskop soon emerged as the centre of the diamond boom, growing into an improbable European-style settlement complete with electricity, a hospital, bakery, butcher, post office and even an ice-making plant.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/>According to National Geographic, for a few decades, extraordinary mineral wealth sustained a surprisingly comfortable town in the desert. <!-- -->Then richer deposits were discovered farther south. The residents left, the mines declined and, by 1956, Kolmanskop was empty. Today, sand is steadily swallowing its abandoned buildings, leaving behind a striking reminder of Namibia\u2019s diamond rush and colonial past.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>How diamonds found in Namibia\u2019s desert sparked the rapid growth of Kolmanskop<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>A railway worker named Zacherias Lewala was clearing sand from the tracks when he noticed stones catching the light. His German supervisor recognised what they were. Diamonds had been found in one of the most inhospitable landscapes in southern Africa.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>Lewala received no reward for the discovery. The consequences for the area were much larger. News travelled, prospectors arrived and the previously remote stretch of desert became the centre of a rapidly expanding diamond industry. Kolmanskop grew around the mines. Within only a few years, the settlement had acquired the appearance of a small European town transplanted into the desert. <!-- -->At its height, roughly a thousand people lived there, including German settlers and local workers employed by the mining industry.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>The diamonds were unusually easy to find in the early years. Stones could sometimes be picked from the surface, scattered among the desert gravel. That made fortunes possible at a speed that would have been difficult to imagine elsewhere. There was a bakery, a butcher, a post office and an ice-making plant. Supplies, including water, could be transported by railway. The settlement had electricity and other conveniences that were rare in such a remote part of the region.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>Its residents could also find entertainment far removed from the mining camp that had initially brought them there. <!-- -->European performers travelled to Kolmanskop, including opera groups. The town developed its own social life and a degree of comfort that contrasted sharply with the surrounding desert.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>Some stories from its more eccentric period have survived. One household kept an ostrich, which became such a nuisance that it was reportedly used to pull a sleigh during Christmas celebrations. Behind the grander buildings was a mining settlement whose existence depended on a highly unequal colonial economy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>The hidden cost of Kolmanskop\u2019s diamond fortunes<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>At the time, Namibia was under German colonial rule as German South West Africa. The diamond discoveries gave the colonial authorities another reason to tighten their control over the region.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>A large area was designated the Sperrgebiet, meaning restricted or forbidden territory. Ordinary people could not simply enter to search for diamonds, and prospecting rights were concentrated in the hands of a company based in Berlin. <!-- -->The restrictions helped turn the diamond fields into a closely controlled source of wealth.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/>The history surrounding Kolmanskop also sits within the much darker history of German colonial rule in Namibia. The Herero people had rebelled against German authorities only a few years before the diamond discovery. German forces responded with a campaign of mass killing and persecution in which tens of thousands of Herero people died.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>From diamond riches to abandonment: Kolmanskop\u2019s slow decline<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"47\"\/>Kolmanskop\u2019s extraordinary prosperity was never going to continue indefinitely. As mining became more intensive, the easily accessible deposits around the town began to diminish. Then the industry found something better.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"49\"\/>In 1928, exceptionally rich diamond deposits were discovered much farther south, along the coast. The new fields offered mining companies a strong reason to shift their attention away from Kolmanskop. <!-- -->Residents began leaving, taking what they could and abandoning buildings and belongings that were no longer worth moving. The town did not collapse in a single moment. It emptied gradually.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"53\"\/>By the 1930s, the original diamond fields were largely exhausted. By 1956, Kolmanskop had been abandoned completely. That left the buildings exposed to the desert.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"55\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>From mining settlement to tourist destination<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"57\"\/>For decades, Kolmanskop was simply an abandoned place in a restricted diamond-mining region. <!-- -->Its second life began in the early 2000s, when a private company received a concession to operate the settlement as a tourist attraction.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>Visitors could then enter the former restricted area under controlled conditions and walk through the remains of the town. The photographs began to travel far beyond Namibia. Rooms filled with sand became particularly recognisable, turning Kolmanskop into one of the country\u2019s best-known abandoned settlements.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"64\"\/>Tourism also gave the ruins an economic role that had nothing to do with diamonds. The sand-covered interiors are what make the site so visually distinctive, yet the same forces that create those scenes are steadily damaging the buildings.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"73\"\/>Conservation work has been carried out, and visitor numbers have been controlled to reduce unnecessary wear. Earlier assessments nevertheless recorded significant deterioration in several structures. Wind, sand and the desert climate continue to work on walls, roofs, doors and interiors.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"75\"\/>There is no simple point at which the process will stop. Preserving Kolmanskop does not mean freezing it exactly as it looked when the final residents departed. <!-- -->The desert is part of the story now, and keeping the settlement standing means deciding which parts should be protected and which changes should be allowed to continue.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"79\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>What remains beneath the sand<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"81\"\/>Kolmanskop is often seen simply as a ghost town, but its ruins tell a larger story. Diamonds brought sudden wealth to this remote corner of colonial Namibia, built on a tightly controlled system of land and labour. When richer deposits were found elsewhere, the town was abandoned. <!-- -->Now the desert is slowly taking it back.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"86\"\/>Sand fills former homes, plaster falls from walls and paint fades beneath years of exposure. Kolmanskop remains a striking record of its diamond-mining past, but it is not frozen in time.
