JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently said that he understands why Gen Z feels the American Dream is slipping away. Between soaring away. Between soaring house prices, rising living costs, and the looming threat of AI reshaping the labour market, young Americans could be forgiven for doubting the historic ideal. A June AP-NORC poll found only one-fifth of adults aged 18 to 29 believe the American Dream is attainable. According to a report by Fortune, in an interview with Firing Line, Dimon pointed to his own family as proof of the Dream\u2019s resilience. His grandparents immigrated from Greece without high school diplomas but instilled a strong sense of purpose in their children and grandchildren. That legacy helped Dimon rise to lead the largest bank in the U.S., a trajectory he says reflects the Dream\u2019s enduring possibility.<\/p>\n

Jamie Dimon believes that the dream remains \u2018totally achievable\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Speaking to PBS, Dimon argued the Dream remains \u201ctotally achievable\u201d for most Americans, noting that the middle class has grown and wealth has increased overall. But he warned that the bottom 20% have seen stagnant incomes for decades, leaving them in struggling neighborhoods and underfunded schools. \u201cFor them, it\u2019s slipping,\u201d he said, adding that this inequality is fueling polarization and anger across society.<\/p>\n

JPMorgan\u2019s American Dream initiative<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Dimon highlighted JPMorgan\u2019s American Dream Initiative, which focuses on six areas including small business support and skills-based training, as part of efforts to expand opportunity. He urged policymakers from both parties to acknowledge inequality and work on solutions, saying: \u201cWhether you\u2019re a Democrat or Republican, acknowledge the problem and then start to say, \u2018How can you fix it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Capitalism under scrutiny<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Dimon, who describes himself as a \u201cpatriotic, unwoke, capitalist CEO,\u201d admitted capitalism has flaws but insisted it remains the best system available. He cautioned against conflating systemic imperfections with alternatives, noting that every system has \u201cbad people.\u201d His comments echo broader debates, with figures like Larry Fink of BlackRock warning that capitalism is fueling economic anxiety by failing too many people.<\/div>\n
