He later posted it on X with an apology attached: anyone who messaged him after Thursday afternoon never got a reply, because by then the laptop was shut for good.The timeline starts early last Wednesday, when roughly 12 people at Google knew Dean was going. At 8:30 AM he told 139 close colleagues on a video call, and his own summary of it is the most-quoted line of the week: tears, explosions of heart and sad face emojis, lots of chats running on the side of the meeting. By 2:30 PM there was a party. Google had booked a cafe space that holds about 300. Around 1,500 people came.Then Dean, who keeps a group run called “Run or Else\u2026” going, went to a 7 PM yoga session and played a soccer league game at 8:30. He got home at 10:30 PM to those 400 messages.<\/p>\n The urgency was technical, not sentimental. Internal chats lived on the corporate account, and the corporate account was expiring. Everything in that inbox would be gone the next day, so he answered all 400 and went to sleep at 2:30 AM. Four hours later he woke to 250 more, plus 500 replies to the farewell email that had CC’d his personal Gmail. At least those won’t disappear in eight hours, he noted on the slide.Thursday was a losing race. By 5:20 PM he had cleared nearly every corporate message and they were still arriving. He closed the laptop anyway.<\/p>\n At 11:59:59 PM, the slide reads: Unemployed. One second past midnight on Friday, it reads co-founder of Discovery Loop, alongside Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le. The startup is a public benefit corporation backed by Alphabet, Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, aiming to automate the experimental loop itself and run thousands of AI-designed experiments in parallel across machine learning, chip design and drug discovery. Alphabet is supplying compute for the first year.The exit lands inside a wider AI reshuffle at Google, with Demis Hassabis moving out of the Google DeepMind CEO role into a chairman post and CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu elevated to SVP.
