Dan Quinn already sounds impressed enough to reset his own expectations.Washington added the 32-year-old after an 11-season NFL career and a 1,013-yard season with the New England Patriots in 2025. On Tuesday, Quinn said Diggs is already showing the route awareness, coverage recognition and football IQ Washington hoped it was getting.<\/p>\n Quinn was asked Tuesday whether he had noticed more explosiveness from Washington\u2019s offense since Diggs arrived. His answer came with an early warning for defenses. \u201cThere\u2019s already been some explosive play passes. The interesting thing about Steph is he\u2019s a smart player.\u201dQuinn said Diggs can work against both zone and man coverage. He understands when to settle into space against zone looks and how to create separation one-on-one. That part of his game has stood out almost immediately.\u201cI thought they were going to be really high, and they\u2019re already past that.\u201dThe \u201cthey\u201d in Quinn\u2019s comment referred to Diggs\u2019 football smarts and instincts. That matters because Diggs is learning a new offense on the fly. He joined Washington late in training camp and has had only a handful of practices to build timing with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Quinn\u2019s Aug. 11 comments came less than a week after Diggs joined the Commanders.The r\u00e9sum\u00e9 explains why Washington was willing to bring him in. Diggs has 942 receptions, 11,504 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns in 161 career games. He also made four consecutive Pro Bowls with the Buffalo Bills from 2020 through 2023.He remained productive in 2025. Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns for New England as the Patriots reached the Super Bowl one year after finishing 4-13.Washington needs that production. The Commanders went 5-12 last season after reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2024. Pairing Diggs with Terry McLaurin gives Daniels two experienced receivers who can create different problems for a defense.Quinn\u2019s comments are significant because Diggs is affecting the offense before he has fully mastered the system. Training camp praise does not guarantee regular-season production, but Washington does not have to guess whether its new receiver can still get open. The early evidence is already showing up in practice.<\/p>\n The early impact is also showing up away from the ball. Second-year Commanders receiver Jaylin Lane told 106.7 The Fan\u2019s \u201cBMitch & Finlay\u201d that Diggs began sharing reads and route details almost as soon as he arrived.\u201cHe’s coming in with knowledge, and he’s trying to give it to everybody. From day one he was coming to me talking, ‘This is what I am seeing.’ And he doesn’t even know the playbook yet. He knows the routes, he understands concepts.\u201dThat gives Washington another experienced voice alongside McLaurin. Diggs has spent more than a decade seeing NFL coverages, leverage and route adjustments. Lane said that knowledge is already reaching younger players in the receiver room.Diggs described the same approach after his first practice with Washington. \u201cMy biggest thing is I always try to push the guys around me to be the best version of themselves.\u201dHe also made clear that he wants his work on the field to carry the message. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to give them everything that I got, and at the same time, more show than tell.\u201dWashington\u2019s own coverage from Diggs\u2019 first practice also noted his emphasis on letting his play speak for him as he learned the offense and began working with his new teammates.Diggs is still learning offensive coordinator David Blough\u2019s system, and his timing with Daniels is still developing. That makes Quinn\u2019s assessment more interesting. The coach expected the veteran\u2019s football intelligence to be high before Diggs arrived. After only a few days, he believes Diggs has already cleared that bar.Washington gets another test Wednesday during a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins in Ashburn. The Commanders then host Miami in their first preseason game Friday at 7 p.m. ET.For now, Diggs has managed to make his presence obvious without needing weeks to do it. Quinn expected the veteran to understand football at a high level.
