Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s CTO for years and now based in Mountain View, takes over day-to-day operations as SVP, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai<\/a>. Notably, Google did not appoint a new DeepMind CEO at all. Minutes after the memo landed, Dean, employee number 30 and a 27-year veteran, said he was leaving with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation Google will fund as founding investor and cloud partner. A person close to the company disputed that any tension existed.
