She had been planning to prepare her signature turkey dish for Memorial Day weekend, but before she could reach her front door, Smith had been shot four times.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>One bullet struck her jaw, two hit her left arm and another entered her spine. As she collapsed on her doorstep, Smith was fighting for her life, and for the life of a baby she was carrying.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>\u2018Don\u2019t let me die\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Smith was three months pregnant, although most of her family did not know she was expecting. As she lay injured, she began praying.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>\u201cAt that moment, everything flashed in front of me,\u201d Smith told PEOPLE. \u201cI just started pleading to God, praying, \u2018Don\u2019t let me die. <!-- -->Don\u2019t let me die. I still had a lot of life ahead of me.\u2019\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>At the hospital, doctors told Smith she might never walk again. Her jaw had been shattered and would require risky surgery. There was also a frightening uncertainty surrounding her unborn child: doctors estimated only a 50-50 chance that the baby would survive the operation.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>Smith eventually emerged from surgery with her mouth wired shut. But there was one piece of news that gave her hope.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>\u201cI came out with my mouth wired shut and the baby had a heartbeat,\u201d Smith recalled. \u201cThat was actually a blessing in itself, for [her] to have a heartbeat after she got out.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>A baby named Miracle<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Six months after the shooting, Smith gave birth to her daughter via C-section.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>There was no long debate over the baby\u2019s name.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>\u201cIt was for the moment,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIt\u2019s self-explanatory.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>She named her Miracle.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Nearly two decades later, that little girl has grown into an 18-year-old preparing to begin college.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>From caring for her mother to pursuing nursing<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Miracle Tisdale recently graduated from Mary Star of the Sea, a Catholic high school in Los Angeles. She completed four years on the Principal\u2019s Honor Roll and served as captain of her traveling cheerleading team.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>In August, she will begin studying at California State University, Fullerton, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>Her career ambition is closely connected to the woman who gave her life.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>\u201cI look at her and I\u2019m overwhelmed every day,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI see her growing into the beautiful, independent woman that she is.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>Miracle became interested in nursing as early as third grade. Over the years, she helped her mother manage everyday tasks, including shopping and bathing.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/>\u201cI already know how to do basic [skills],\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>Smith, now 42, continues to experience muscle spasms and other effects of the shooting. She periodically requires hospital care and has had to navigate life with a disability.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"47\"\/>During her pregnancy, she had to regain movement in her left arm and learn to use a wheelchair while caring for two toddlers.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/>\u201cI was just angry. I didn\u2019t do anything to deserve that,\u201d Smith said of the shooting, which was never solved.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/>But she found motivation in her children.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>\u201cShe sticks by me through the good, the bad, the ugly,\u201d Smith said of Miracle. \u201cShe\u2019s stood through it all.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"56\"\/>\u201cThere are certain times where I end up back in the hospital with my disability,\u201d she continued, noting that she returns about every six months. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a battle for [Miracle] and she\u2019s just definitely strong-minded. <!-- -->She\u2019s definitely a leader.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>A chance encounter changed Miracle\u2019s future<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Miracle\u2019s path to her high school also began with an unexpected connection.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"63\"\/>After she completed eighth grade, a police officer who had worked on her family\u2019s case got back in touch. The officer connected Miracle with Operation Progress, an LAPD partnership with the organisation Strive that provides mentoring and scholarship opportunities.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"65\"\/>That introduction eventually helped Miracle secure a full scholarship to her private school.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"68\"\/>The adjustment was difficult at first.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"70\"\/>\u201cI think it was a learning curve,\u201d Miracle said. \u201cAt first, I felt like I didn\u2019t belong there because I didn\u2019t really know people.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"72\"\/>But she eventually found her place and developed friendships that became like family.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"74\"\/>\u201cThey became sisters and family to me,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"76\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>The moment Rose had prayed for<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Then came the moment Smith had spent years hoping she would live to see.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"79\"\/>In May, Miracle walked across the stage at her high-school graduation with her mother watching from the audience.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"82\"\/>For Smith, the ceremony brought back years of memories &#8211; the shooting, the surgeries, the disability and the sacrifices that followed.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"84\"\/>\u201cSo much went through my mind because it took so much energy, so many sacrifices,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThere were long days, there were stressful days, but through it all we made it through and that was the moment I prayed to God to see.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"87\"\/>The milestone seemed to pass almost as quickly as it arrived.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"90\"\/>\u201cI was just praying to get through to see that moment and the four years, it went by so fast and that moment went by so fast,\u201d Smith recalled. \u201cI was just trying to soak up the moment.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"92\"\/>Now Miracle is preparing to leave home for college. She admits she is excited and nervous about starting another chapter, but she is taking her family\u2019s philosophy with her.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"94\"\/>\u201cAll things happen for a reason.
