Well, you really should know what you are signing up for, beyond the highlights reel you see on Instagram. NYC is surely the city of dreams, but all of it comes at a real ‘cost’. From housing to food and transportation, you should be aware of the cost of living.Trisha, who has lived in NYC for over eight years, has shared a realistic breakdown of the expenses of living in the city for an individual in their 20s. In a video shared on Instagram, she spoke about how much it actually costs to live in NYC. “I break down all the mistakes I’ve made and things I’ve learned in my eight years living here, so hopefully you can navigate this city more confidently.”So, the real question you should be asking yourself is not, “Can I afford it?” It’s more like, “What am I willing to give up to afford it?” Because you can live in NYC on almost any budget if you get strategic. The trick is knowing which financial corners actually matter and which ones will just make you miserable.

Housing

Let’s start with the boulder crushing your bank account: housing. The city, particularly Manhattan, is expensive. “If you want to live alone, a studio or one-bedroom in Manhattan will cost you anywhere from $3,500 to over $5,000 a month,” Trisha said in the video. That’s per month. Some neighbourhoods will charge you more, some less, but that’s the range. The maths gets better fast with roommates. “If you’re okay with roommates, you can bring that number down to $1,800 to $2,800 per person,” she said. This is the maths if you want to live in the city. Housing is more affordable in Brooklyn compared to Manhattan. “Manhattan is the most expensive borough, so if you need something a little more affordable, be flexible with the other boroughs and neighbourhoods.”

Food and drinks

This is where you can actually save money if you’re smart about it. Cook most of your meals. According to Trisha, a person in their 20s may have to spend around $500 to $700 on groceries in a month if they are cooking most of their meals at home. That’s genuinely doable if you’re not buying fancy prepared foods and you learn to shop at bodegas instead of whole-wheat, artisanal whatever stores. A rotisserie chicken, some rice, and frozen vegetables — you know the drill. That’s not only best for your wallet but also for your health. On the other hand, if you eat out, the number goes up. “If you’re eating and getting drinks out multiple times a week, which is the more New York lifestyle, you’re looking at $900 to $1,400 a month. And if you’re out most nights, that number can climb past $1,800 easily,” she said. That’s the lifestyle the city sells you. Brunch exists. Happy hours happen. Sometimes you’ll go out four nights in a week and think nothing of it. If you’re out almost every night, the tab climbs past $1,800 with barely any effort.

Moving around

Transit is the city’s secret deal. Always depending on taxis to move around the city will cost you more. “The subway costs $3 per ride and you’ll never be charged for more than 12 rides in one week if you pay with the same card every time. So budget around $150 a month for the subway. And for the occasional late-night Uber, budget another $50 to $150 a month, depending on how often. So your total transit costs for the month could be anywhere between $150 and $300,” Trisha said.

Entertainment and more

This one’s the wildcard because it depends entirely on who you are. NYC has a lot of entertainment to offer. So, if you go to a concert or show once a month, do some shopping, hit a weekend activity, and maybe have a gym or fitness class membership, you’re probably spending $100 to $500 monthly. The people who struggle here are the ones trying to be in the city but not of the city. They’re hitting every rooftop bar, trying out new restaurants every other day, chasing Instagram-worthy moments. That version of NYC costs way more than the city itself actually charges. That’s the version that breaks people. If you are in your 20s, single in NYC, and on a budget, you will be spending anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000-plus a month realistically, Trisha shared. This again is highly dependent on where you live, how you eat, and how you spend your free time. NYC is certainly not cheap to live in, but if you are intentional about spending, you can absolutely make it.

Source link

In your 20s and planning to move to New York City?
